Finally feeling motivated

Its Thursday morning, which is not the time I usually associate with being positive, or active or inspired. However today, I finally realised something for the first time.

I was just watching music in the background whilst I cleaned and did some housework, when this video came on. I can't recall the song, but the whole video was around one woman working it. She had the most amazing body- not too butch, but strong and lean, still feminine. She looked so fabulous, and I thought hmm, I bet she doesn't spend her days drinking wine, eating crisps and cheese.

So, I have finally given in and accepted it. I either stay as I am, constantly wanting to look better, never quite getting there. Or I do something different. I could make different choices, and get entirely different results.

With this in mind, I have to get my backside off this sofa and get my exercises done. Get my diet sorted, and get my life in control. Starting now. :)

Fun in Crete #2 before we even begin nom nom nom

Even before we left Blighty, we were on our holidays. We celebrated waving goodbye to our suitcases for a few hours with Nacho's. Nom nom nom.

Pulled pork nachos, and cheesy nachos. Yum!

Large glass of pinot? Don't mind if I do!!

Fun in Crete :) #1 Animal Magic

I went off on my holidays to Crete in July. It was scorchio!! First night, I decided to be a bit of an animal:

Well it had to be done. It was so flippin hot though, and our apartment backed onto the garden area, which meant we were serenaded by crickets!!

It was quite nice at first, but first thing in the morning they were so loud!! Between the crickets and the air con, it was like going deaf when it went quiet for a moment!!

My round up of the most bonkers ways to lose weight

    • The Apple diet - literally you just eat apples.
    • Only eat with chopsticks !!
    • The clingfilm wrap - yep - you wrap yourself in it and work out!!
    • The cabbage soup diet - yuck!!
    • The maple syrup diet
Not sure I like the sound of any of these!! As I come across others, I shall add them to the list :)

Reasons to Stick to my Diet Number 13 - lying on the sofa won't make me bikini ready

    Number 13:

Today's reason to stick to the diet - lying on the sofa won't make me bikini ready!! And yet I am having one of those days when that is all I want to do.

I just want to put my head in those cushions, lay back, still a film on and be done with it. But I can't. Well, I could, but then there would be no point when I am looking back on holiday in beating myself up and feeling fat. If I choose that option, I deserve to look crap on the beach.

So, today's reason is that lying on the sofa will not make me bikini ready. So that has to be a start to get me up and active today and stay away from the chocolates!! :)

Word of the Week - Permeate

    • to pass into or through every part of:
      • Bright sunshine permeated the room.

    • to penetrate through the pores, interstices, etc., of.

    • to be diffused through; pervade; saturate:

    • Cynicism permeated his spread through something and be present in every part of it

    definition derived from

I would love to be a Salvage Hunter!!

I would so love to do this for a living. Finding hidden gems, bagging a bargain. My absolute dream job.

I would do a Kirsty Allsop - checking out what's gone into skips for starters - vintage doors, mirror frames, stuff you can upcycle. Fabulous.

Then there's the bigger scale stuff that the proper salvage hunters do. Going to storage yards and stately homes to find items that you can do up and sell for £'s profit. Iron benches, church pews - you name it.

There is just something appealing about making something disregarded into something special.

The only issue is you need an income or a solid amount of savings to live off in case you don't find a bargain or you can't sell it on. I'm not quite there yet, but its where I want to be.

I want to be a salvage hunter!!

    Posh Pool Party :)

We headed off to our local Spa for a Posh Pool Party at the beginning of December last year.

It was so lovely. Heated outdoor pool.

Real log fire burning to keep us warm.

Full use of the spa, including white robes.

    Drinks of course!!

    Live music.

Right - now I just need to get us booked up again!! :)

I want one of these - just me all over!

I find myself keeping receipts. I have no idea what for. Yes, occasionally, you might want to keep a receipt for a large purchase, or an electrical item for the warranty.

But for petrol? For a bar of chocolate or your lunchtime sandwich?

Yes, I have this issue so I need to also have this tin!!

Gran Canaria 2017 - Our Place in the Sun

This year we headed off to Gran Canaria for our fourth trip. Its become my favourite place ever, even more so than Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. There is just something about the area we visit that we love.

It always feel safe and friendly. The weather is great, the sea is powerful and amazing, the beach is out of this world. The food is great, you can eat for reasonable money, and the drinks are lovely. We have been all inclusive, bed and breakfast and most recently self catering, and its just fabulous.

This year we stayed in what was called a "bungalow". It was fab but it wasn't a bungalow - it was upstairs and downstairs!

It was mega - our own private little terrace, a balcony upstairs too and right next the pool - heated too!

The food and drink was amazing. First night - chinese chow mein. Yum.

With wine of course - rude not to.

We even found a turtle pool! Aren't they fab? Loved them.

The sunsets in Gran Canaria are beautiful. It goes a little chilly at night due to the wind, but its lovely after a hot day.

Canarian potatoes at Tapas bars are a must. My favourite.

Accompanied by Long Island Ice Tea which is lush.

I just never get bored of this place. The palm trees, the lighthouse, the shops, the bars, the restaurants, the people - perfect place.

This is where I need to get back to

I need some inspiration to get me back on track. So here it is - this is how I looked before piling weight on again!! Various holidays over the years. Right now, I am totally not bikini ready! Hopefully, looking back at these snaps will help motivate me and focus my mind:

    My Travels in Barcelona

This year,  I decided to book my other half a romantic break. After perusing the reviews and travel sites, I decided on Barcelona. Now, whilst it is possible to be romantic - its a beautiful city, its so much more than that. We stayed on La Ramblas, next to the Gothic quarter, and it was amazing, in your face and totally authentic.

We were more towards the middle of La Ramblas, so just a couple of minutes walk from the monument and the harbour.

Of course no trip to Barcelona could be complete without the obligatory visit to the Nou Camp stadium or Camp Nou as the Spanish actually call it. When in Spain...

Then there is the Gaudi masterpiece, that is still being worked on, Sagrada Familiar - started in 1882. Crikey! How breathtaking though.

Our hotel being on La Ramblas, we tried some of the local Tapas - very nice. The actual area though is mega busy and bustling - exciting and a bit intimidating all at the same time.

The port is beautiful and catching it at sunset is a must. Some of the yachts further around are out of this world - how the other half live.

For our final night, as we had watched the sunset, we opted for pink mojitos.

We loved this city break - but its not for the faint hearted. Its one of those places that you remember forever. One off the bucket list for sure!

    Next Holiday Destination???

We decided to book in advance for once for next year's hols. Usually, we book between 3 & 6 months ahead, but we thought we would get organised. Well, that was the plan anyway.

Cue 2 months or so of us browsing holiday destinations and we are still nowhere even close to decided. It's starting to become annoying now.

I love a beach holiday, but my other half only likes beach holidays. Whereas I would like to alternate. One beach hol, one exploring hol not necessarily somewhere hot. There is a huge world out there.

So we almost agreed that we would go to America - New England, just the two of us. Then enter G into the equation. She wants to go to the USA too. Now, New England is Stephen King land, and I wanted to go in the fall when the trees are in their autumn colours. This is not a hol for a 12 year old.

Then we started to consider Orlando. This would be with G. The first hurdle was the time away issue. As in you need two weeks not one. That was resolved quicker and easier than expected.

There is a lot to do there so we looked at a twin break. Disney, Universal, Florida, Miami, Seaworld - crikey! But then there are other places in the USA that I want to go. Namely Washington, New York, Chicago to name but a few.

Not to mention the Caribbean and Hawaii! So that got us onto cruises. We also want to go on a cruise. I want to go to the Caribbean. The Med is the destination of choice for my other half.

But we also want to go to Greece. An all inclusive yes, but also an island hopping trip. Some just me and him, some the family. Depends when and where as to which is which.

But then again we love the Canaries. We have been to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura together, and I have been to Lanzarote before, and I love them.

So where do we go? Do we do the Med? If so, do we do all inclusive, island hopping or a cruise?

Or do we go longhaul to the USA? Do we go to touristy Orlando or off the beaten track South America?

There is so much world out there to see, its hard to pin it down. More research me thinks. Back to the drawing board!!

My Week with Adele Day 3 - Chasing Pavements

It's Day 3 of my week with Adele and today its 'Chasing Pavements'.

'Chasing Pavements' was her second single to be released from her debut album 19 back in 2008.  This was the first song I ever heard from Adele, and even then, as young as she was - clue being in the name of the album, her vocals were solid.

Now, Adele as we know her has written of her personal life and pain, but apparently this song was based around a cheating boyfriend that she punched in the face. Get in there - you go girl.

This song is beautifully done vocally, and whilst it shows her talent, it only hints at the greatest to come from this true home grown success. The accompanying video is wonderfully choreographed, if a bit morbid - featuring a crash a sort of what could have been.

As with most of Adele's output, she wrote the song herself, walking home from said confrontation with the cheating boyfriend. Not only does she sound great, she is also the writer - wow.

I loved this song on first hearing it, and time has if anything done it justice - it sounds better than ever. If you haven't heard her early stuff, go and take a listen or just go and remind yourself how great she was even at the start.

Not the most morose of her songs, whilst the subject matter may have been the cause of a broken heart, the song itself is quite upbeat. Fabulous. Not surprisingly, the single reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.

    New dress on its holidays

I was slimmer on holiday, that is for sure. I bought myself a new dress as a treat - bargain from New Look.

Here it is enjoying a night out on our hol:

Its a white dress with blue flowers, and is really lightweight and perfect for a hot climate. I was slimmer a few weeks ago and it fitted me nicely. I need to get back to this point so that I can wear it again :)

How do thin people get slim??

I find myself wondering how do thin people get slim? I ask this because as someone for whom slim is a dream, it is so bloody hard.

Some people don't, on the appearance face of it, seem to struggle at all. Some people in fact seem to be able to eat what they wish. I am not one of them. Sadly.

So I find myself watching those lucky enough to be slim, to be thin, and wondering what they eat, and just how they have come to be how they are.

Do they eat at all? If they do, what do they eat? How often do they eat it? Do they ever over indulge?

Me for instance. I diet, I go to the gym. But boy do I let my hair down. Especially on hols. All inclusive or otherwise, its all about relaxing, eating, drinking and having fun.

Sometimes on holiday, there are those women that look amazing. Not only on the first day. All holiday. Me - I get more bloated as the hol goes on. My clothes get tighter, my tum more pronounced. So how do they do it? Don't they indulge? Or do they work it off? It's my mission to find out how they do it. )

Since when did everyone swear so much??

I'm having a moan again. I am turning into a grumpy bag aren't I? But I want to know since when did everyone swear so much?

I'm not a prude. Far from it. I think a good outburst every once in a while purges and vents the anger. When though, did it become the norm for it to be what sounds like every other word?

I have certain expectations myself. I expect when there are children around, that adults will show some restraint and moderate their language. Call me old fashioned, but I expect that when I as a woman enter a bar, or a restaurant, or the supermarket for heaven's sake, that men will curb their language in my presence.

This is not a sexist statement, as most importantly, I expect women in particular to not use foul language in my company as a rule, but in particular there is one certain word that no woman should speak.
Now, to clarify, I am not referring to all foul language. Just certain words. I'm talking the big boys here - the effs and the jeffs. I'm talking the big W and the T's. But my banned word begins with a curly C. Under no circumstances!!!!!

I understand that a bit of road rage or trolley rage, or kicking your toe up may require a certain amount of venting. I understand that during an argument or even after one, that we all sometimes need to express just how annoyed we are, just how upset. Language has a place and this is it.

I have to ask though, these people who use it in every sentence, at regular intervals, or even every other word, just how exactly do they express extreme emotion? For most of us, its the particular use of these words that is a statement of just how much on a scale of 1-10 we are reaching. If you always speak this way, then what is left to say when you are on point 10 or nuclear? Do you then not swear to show how you feel? Oh what beautiful irony that would be.

I don't know if its just me, but I am so tired of hearing it. I feel that its everywhere, and in every place. Its on the TV, its in books, its quoted in papers, its the driver with the window down, its the kids walking to school. What has happened to us and since when did everyone swear so much???

Alcohol makes me want to eat this!!

Its a well known fact that when you have a glass or two of your tipple of choice (wine in my case) that the next day you will feel hungry and its never a salad you crave now is it!!

I didn't have a lot - a few glasses, so no hangover as such to report. No bad head etc.. but by gosh I am hungry! Have been all day. What I want to eat, what would really hit the spot would be this:

I am proper craving stodge. Cheese and onion pasty, chips, or a chilli con carne or lasagne. Or just a lovely fry up like this one. Why does it happen? Its always fatty stodgy salty stuff for me. I can't actually have any of course - its going to be hard enough trying to get the weight loss target this week as it is, but you tell my stomach that!!

My Week with Adele Day 2 - Someone Like You

Today for my second choice in my Week with Adele I have chosen the wonderful 'Someone Like You'.

'Someone Like You'  was taken from Adele's second album 21, in 2011. Unsurprisingly, it reached the number 1 spot in the UK singles charts.

This song, co written with Dan Wilson, could have been a depressing number, written as it is about Adele's heartbreak following her relationship breakdown. However, despite it having such a stripped back and sombre tone, it somehow lifts up out of it and being so beautifully sung and composed, it takes your breath away rather than pull you down into her despair.

We all know the pain, or at least most of us do, that relationships can bring. Adele sank herself into this and gives it all she has. Its a sort of emotional venting for a lost love. Its very sad, but my god what a song. It gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, and it still pulls me in.

Adele's vocals, always wonderful, are never better showcased than when its just her and the piano. The lyrics could make you weep they are so personal "Nevermind, I'll find someone like you/I wish nothing but the best for you, too/Don't forget me, I beg/I'll remember you said/Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead", but you can't help but ruin it by warbling along with it. Well, me anyway!

The video to this, is a suitably morose affair - black and white, Adele looking miserable and heartbroken - yep, not one to watch or indeed listen to if you feel emotional - or maybe it is - sort of a sympathetic venting - let it out as they say.

A beautiful song from a beautiful woman, who should truly not look back at someone foolish enough to let her go. What a fool that man must be. Whose laughing now Adele? You. Go girl!

Amazing song. So there we have my choice for Day 2. Which should I choose next? Decisions decisions. Go take a listen - song perfection.

My Week with Adele Day 1 - Hello

So for my first choice of my week with Adele is the utterly fabulous 'Hello'.

Adele is a huge talent with a huge voice, and its never been better showcased than in this particular song. 'Hello' will most likely go down in history as one of the best songs of all time.

Released back in 2015, 'Hello' was the lead single from her third album 25. Unsurprisingly, it hit the number 1 spot in the UK singles chart, not to mention virtually everywhere else in the world, giving her a second number 1 to date at the time.

'Hello' is a very pure, clean song, and in that I mean its just piano, drums and vocals - no synth, no effects - just her raw talent. And raw too is the content - its like she's speaking to an ex, years later, lessons learned and moved on, but still remembering that things ended badly. Most of us have that experience behind us, one way or another.

The simplicity and the power of this song, combine with her beyond comparison vocals, to hit one powerful note - emotionally, metaphorically and in reality. The accompanying video adds to the effect, in black and white and simple and powerful. Adele looks mesmerising and beautiful.

This is a sort of pop soul ballad, but like none other. She puts such range and emotion into each note, and it just lifts you off your feet and takes you somewhere. Adele is such a huge vocalist, but it doesn't overpower - it envelops you, and makes you feel wonderful.

So there we have it, my first song choice of 7. Check back for my next choice, or check out my Music page for more of my previous choices, singles of the week and more. Loved listening to this again - still amazing. Go remind yourself - happy listening :)

Reasons to Stick to My Diet Number 11 - toned pins

    Number 11:

I have never been one of those women that throws on a pair of shorts in summer. At a push, I will don a pair on holiday where noone I know is likely to see me but I don't have the pins for shorty shorts.

I would love to have toned pins so that I can - so that's today's motivation :)

    My Week with Adele begins

So here we go - my week with Adele begins. But first, lets have a look at where this mega talent came from and how she got to where she is.

Adele's full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. Who knew? When you only need your first name for everyone to know who you are, noone ever learns your surname but there it is. Amazingly, born in 1988, Adele is still very young even though she seems to have been around forever!

Now Adele is English, she is from Tottenham, London. She was always into her music, writing her hit song 'Hometown Glory' when she was just 16. She attended the BRIT school for performing arts. When she graduated, she recorded a couple of demo songs which got heard, and she got her first contract in 2006.

She performed live a number of times, before her debut album was released in 2008 and she immediately hit the charts. Her album 19, her first, hit the number one spot in the album charts. Chasing Pavements was the first song I ever heard from Adele, and it reached number 2 in the singles chart. A superstar was born.

Her second album came out in 2011 - 21. Unsurprisingly, it went to number one in the albums chart. Rolling in the Deep was the first single from the album, and reached number 2 in the UK singles chart, but also started her megastardom in the US. It was her second single from the album that reached number one - the amazing 'Someone Like You'.

In 2012, Adele released the James Bond theme 'Skyfall'. Her third studio album came out in 2015 - 25. It became that year's best selling album, and the lead single 'Hello' hit the number one spot in the UK and in the US.

Sell out tours, and her latest tour continuing well into 2017, culminating in her hometown London in the summer, mean Adele is at the top of her game. Worldwide success, and personal happiness for Adele - marriage and a child, plus charity work, mean she is a 100% success but still keeps it real. When she speaks, she is down to earth. For all her fame and fortune, she is a genuine person and that is what makes us love her all the more.

I shall choose just seven of her tracks for my week with the wonderful Adele - reviewing each, then deciding which of her music thus far is at the top of the list, according to me of course!!

I am looking forward to this - the only problem is choosing just 7! Pop back to find out which make the list. :)
