If you want it, then go get it!

You only get one life, so if there is something you want, then you have to go and get it. There is a place for dreams and fantasies, but if you don't aim high, you will never get to where you want to be.

No matter what it is that you want, there is a way to get it. In my case, one of the things I want is an amazing body. The problem is that I spend too long sitting on my backside thinking about it, and feeling fed up. What I should be doing is moving my behind, taking each day as a step closer to being where I want to be.

I spend hours planning, looking for "that bikini" or the exercise that will best tone my back, and I do try - just not enough. I do make progress, then I relapse and end up not quite back to the starting point, but significantly further back.

So I've finally got with the show - if I want it, I have to go and get it. That means no more procrastinating and planning, although some planning is required, it needs to be as well as the actual "doing".

Lots of people I know and have met in my life, past and present, and no doubt future, will all of had dreams and aspirations. Not many of those many many people have actually reached that goal, whatever it may be, and I find that so sad.

Whats the point in having dreams if they never come true? It could get you down if you let it. So I am going to go and get it - the body, the car, the holiday, the place in the sun. I believe I will have those things, I really do. I am going to make it happen. I really am. Not entirely sure how yet, but I'm sure the details will sort themselves out if I want it enough and if I believe in myself enough. I do.
Finally.

I would love to be a Salvage Hunter!!

I would so love to do this for a living. Finding hidden gems, bagging a bargain. My absolute dream job.

I would do a Kirsty Allsop - checking out what's gone into skips for starters - vintage doors, mirror frames, stuff you can upcycle. Fabulous.

Then there's the bigger scale stuff that the proper salvage hunters do. Going to storage yards and stately homes to find items that you can do up and sell for £'s profit. Iron benches, church pews - you name it.

There is just something appealing about making something disregarded into something special.

The only issue is you need an income or a solid amount of savings to live off in case you don't find a bargain or you can't sell it on. I'm not quite there yet, but its where I want to be.

I want to be a salvage hunter!!

My retro single of the week - The Killers - Mr Brightside

This week I have chosen the fantastic 'Mr Brightside' from the Killers as my retro single of the week.

'Mr Brightside' was the debut single from The Killers. It was the first single from their debut album 'Hot Fuss' which was released in 2004.

The album smashed to the top of the UK album charts, and this single peaked at number 10 in the UK singles chart.

This is such a brilliant song. I haven't heard it for some time now, but its one of those songs that still sounds distinct, recognisable and fresh. Its a song that also won lots of acclaim and recognition - its won awards for the best song of the decade, best track and been recognised by XFM, NME, various radio and TV to name but a few. Yes, its that good.

'Mr Brightside' is a rock song. It kicks straight in with that distinctive piano/keyboard tinkling that continues through it. The guitars kick in, then the drums and builds as Flowers vocals come in with the fabulous lyrics "coming out of my cage, and I've been doing just fine".

The video, well one of 2 videos this being the official one, is all ladies made up like madams a la Moulin Rouge style. They dance whilst the men look on, including Brandon who is watching whilst singing. Clearly this song is about being unfaithful, as this plays out with none other than Eric Roberts starring as the other man, whilst the lady flirts about between him and Flowers.

Apparently the song is based around an unfaithful ex of Flowers. The lyrics continue "It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this". My particular favourite is the line "jealousy, turning saints into the sea, swimming through sick lullabies, choking on your alibis". Its just so clever, and he sings it with such force, such angst, it just sweeps you up.

This song truly put The Killers on the map. For a debut single, its just perfect, and I don't believe it could have been bettered. It still sounds absolutely amazing.

I suggest you go and take a listen to this, and play it loud as its just about as good as it gets this one. Let me know if you enjoyed it, and happy listening. :)

Sweat is Fat Crying :(

I just saw this caption under a photograph of someone working out in the gym. It inspired me. The body of the person in question was immensely impressive.

When it gets a bit too much at the gym, its this sort of motivation that keeps me going. Sweat is fat crying - well in that case, my fat needs to get the hankies at the ready - its going to sob!!! :)

Posh Pool Party :)

We headed off to our local Spa for a Posh Pool Party at the beginning of December.

It was so lovely. Heated outdoor pool.

Real log fire burning to keep us warm.

Full use of the spa, including white robes.

Drinks of course!!

Live music.

Barbeque food. Yum!

We had such a brilliant time.

Right - now I just need to get us booked up again!! :)

Stumbled upon inspiration

I was just browsing through some tweets, when I found this quote "If you're not coming across any failures or setbacks in your life, then you're not working towards success". My gosh never a wiser word spoken!!

I have derailed quite spectacularly, so this inspired me immensely.

Tomorrow is another day. :)

What would you do??

What would you do if you won the lottery? I'm talking a big win here, like £1m. A life changing amount? I think most people have a vague notion of what they might do. We are all different, and I suppose it depends on your own time of life, status and aspirations.

For me, it would be property. I would do the usual stuff - new car, home improvements, a holiday. I would look after the people that matter to me.

I certainly would not broadcast it to the masses. All manner of folks I'd not seen in years would no doubt come out of the woodwork!! Again, it would be those that mattered, and even then, quite possibly, I wouldn't actually tell people.

You can imagine it can't you? "I've won the lotto" would prompt everyone to speculate over how much. If I said "I've won a million, people might expect a certain £ share of it. Now, depending on how many in the family and friends network, that could cause some issues. So no, I wouldn't give away the details.

What I would do, is buy some properties. A flat in Manchester and a flat in London as bolt holes when we go to gigs, shopping etc.. That way, everyone benefits, and it could earn a crust whilst its not in use.

What next? A property in the canaries is a must for me. Winter sun - no place better or closer. I would love to spend winter in the Canaries, and back to blighty for what passes as summer here!!

I'm thinking a little gites in the south of france would be amazing too. On top of this, I would have a Personal Trainer every day, a dietitian to sort my meals and help me to get the weight off, and also every beauty treatment suitable to make me look the best I can, including some laser treatment!!

So that would be my plan, dependent on how much and when it might happen.

So what would you do?  :)

My idea of a perfect menu

I like food, but I would not describe myself as a "foodie" as such, on account of being quite picky about things.  I often find myself going out for meals and having a limited choice on the menu given that some places don't cater for us not quite veggie but a little wary of meat eater types - I actually don't think we have a category - awkward maybe??

You go to the traditional pub menu and your choices tend to be lasagne, chilli, or chicken breast or burgers. For the more up market venues, you do get gourmet burgers, chicken skewers or mexican food like fajitas. I don't always want a veggie option, but what I cannot cope with is steaks, and meat on the bone or anything I have to fight with - fish with bones in, or crab, lobster etc...

My ideal menu would probably be Italian overall - lots of choices for me - gnocchi, pizza, pasta, bruschetta - mmmm. Mexican is also good, as is curry and balti. Chinese - again, lots of choices. Its when you go to a "non country" type restaurant that I struggle, and I like to go to somewhere more varied. Much as I love Italian, Indian, and Chinese, I would prefer to mix and match.

With this in mind, I have come up my ideal menu, should I ever have the choice to create it!

My perfect menu:

Starters:

  • Potato skins
  • Nacho's
  • Crispy aromatic duck and pancakes
  • Onion bhaji
  • Poppadom and choice of dips
  • Pate and toast
  • Garlic mushrooms
  • Bread board with oils and vinegars
  • Staffordshire oatcakes with choice of fillings
Mains:
  • Chicken Tikka Massala
  • Gourmet burger with stilton
  • Chilli Burrito
  • Red Thai Curry
  • Gnocchi with three cheese
  • Cajun Chicken breast
  • Sizzly chicken skewers
  • Lemon chicken
  • Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Mushroom stroganoff
  • Sausages and mash with gravy
  • Sweet and Sour Chicken
  • Chilli con carne

  • Cheese board
  • Hot chocolate fudge cake
  • White chocolate cheesecake
  • Chocolate sundae
  • Death by chocolate
  • Apple crumble
  • Jammy doughnuts with cream

Next Holiday Destination???

We decided to book in advance for once for next year's hols. Usually, we book between 3 & 6 months ahead, but we thought we would get organised. Well, that was the plan anyway.

Cue 2 months or so of us browsing holiday destinations and we are still nowhere even close to decided. It's starting to become annoying now.

I love a beach holiday, but my other half only likes beach holidays. Whereas I would like to alternate. One beach hol, one exploring hol not necessarily somewhere hot. There is a huge world out there.

So we almost agreed that we would go to America - New England, just the two of us. Then enter G into the equation. She wants to go to the USA too. Now, New England is Stephen King land, and I wanted to go in the fall when the trees are in their autumn colours. This is not a hol for a 12 year old.

Then we started to consider Orlando. This would be with G. The first hurdle was the time away issue. As in you need two weeks not one. That was resolved quicker and easier than expected.

There is a lot to do there so we looked at a twin break. Disney, Universal, Florida, Miami, Seaworld - crikey! But then there are other places in the USA that I want to go. Namely Washington, New York, Chicago to name but a few.

Not to mention the Caribbean and Hawaii! So that got us onto cruises. We also want to go on a cruise. I want to go to the Caribbean. The Med is the destination of choice for my other half.

But we also want to go to Greece. An all inclusive yes, but also an island hopping trip. Some just me and him, some the family. Depends when and where as to which is which.

But then again we love the Canaries. We have been to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura together, and I have been to Lanzarote before, and I love them.

So where do we go? Do we do the Med? If so, do we do all inclusive, island hopping or a cruise?

Or do we go longhaul to the USA? Do we go to touristy Orlando or off the beaten track South America?

There is so much world out there to see, its hard to pin it down. More research me thinks. Back to the drawing board!!

Dream Big

Life is short, too short. Its important to have hopes and dreams or what's it all for? You could easily watch the news these days and become down and disheartened, thinking, wrongly, that the world is a terrible place where only bad things happen.

Lets make no mistake - bad things do happen.

So when it comes to hopes and dreams, you can hope for the best, and that's great. When it comes to dreams, you should always dream big. There is no point having small dreams.

If its a dream, then aim high. Shoot for the stars, reach for the moon, climb that mountain. If you aim for the pinnacle of the highest peak, you might only reach the midway point. But if you had only aimed for the foothills, would you have even tried to climb that mountain? Surely halfway to the top is better than staying at the bottom and not trying?

I'm talking about your dreams here. I'm not saying aim to be a brain surgeon as that's most likely unrealistic for most of us. I am saying that you should consider what it is that would make you feel fulfilled, give you satisfaction or happiness.

Maybe its running a 5K for the first time when you are a couch potato. Maybe its writing a book if you've got a good story. Maybe its getting on a plane to somewhere new. Or maybe its a career change, or a house move. Whatever it is, imagine it, picture it, dream it. Dream big.

You might need some small steps to make progress. But its the taking part that counts. Dream big. :)

Gran Canaria 2017 - LBD !

So early in 2017, we headed off to Gran Canaria once again. This time we decided to try self catering accommodation and the place was lovely. So many yummy restaurants and bars its a shame to go all inclusive or half board and miss out.

However, there is always a need to dress appropriately, and this year once again saw me in another variation of the obligatory LBD:

Gran Canaria 2016 - LBD (and white)

2016 saw us head off to Gran Canaria for a third time. Staying in a different place again this time, but of course, the obligatory LBD had to be worn - this time with a splash of white I grant you!

I'm on the beach now (probably)

Just checking in to remind you I'm away on my hols and probably will be on a beach right about now.

What are you up to? Is the weather nice? :)

My favourite words - strange but true

I know this might sound a bit sad, and in all likelihood it probably is, but I have certain words that I love. They just sound good and feel good rolling off my tongue.

The first of my favourite words is this: Haberdashery.

I think this one seems to elicit some memory from childhood, some notion of fabric rolls, sewing patterns, cottons and crafts and good scissors. It makes me think of my nana and my mum. Mum still with me, but nana is long passed, and the word feels like she is with me.

The next of my favourite words is this: Bibliography.

The actual meaning of this is quite bland, but I just love the word. Its basically what you have to put in a book to show where you got your research etc..

My next favourite word is this: Swashbuckling.

Not a word you hear much in modern conversation I grant you, but nevertheless I love this word!! It makes me think of adventures and romance.

My next one is actually a brand but the word is : Swarovski.

Now I know that the sparkles from Austria are very beautiful, and I love them also, but its the word I love too. It some how feels beautiful in your mouth. I love to say it, to pronounce it and somehow it even looks pretty and appealing to me.

For my next word that I love its a foody one: Tagliatelle.

Yes, its pasta. Those long thin ribbons of pasta to be precise. But I love the word, because it sounds what it is - Italian. Unlike other names for pasta, this one  somehow appeals to me.

My Top 10 Chicken Dishes

Gran Canaria 2015 - LBD!!

Gran Canaria 2015 was fabulous. The weather was amazing. I took with me a new little black dress and here it is on its very first outing:

Gran Canaria can get quite chilly in the evening sometimes - just being a windy place rather then temperature wise, so this was perfect for the climate. It was also very forgiving mid holiday after some over indulgence!!

The world is your Swimming Pool

You've heard the phrase - The World is Your Oyster right? You've no doubt heard the world is your ocean? Well, lets be realistic for a moment shall we?

Unless you are a billionaire, entrepeneur, with a private jet, loads of time and loads of people (minions) around you to deal with the day to day stuff, then you probably don't have the whole ocean.

Its like this. When you are born, you have all the opportunities in front of you. Some people are born to be athletes, or brain surgeons, or astronauts. Those are the few. They have the whole ocean to explore. For most people, we are either restricted from such achievements physically or academically, or have no desire to spend our entire lives working for greatness.

No, for most of us, the world is our swimming pool. We can still have a good old travel, swim in any direction, and have a lot of space, to find ourselves, to be successful. Some of us may have a pool more the size of a sea, if we push ourselves that is.

Why is this? Well, when you were a child someone probably told you once that you weren't very good at something - maybe spelling, or running - choose your option. You were probably also told you were good at something - you may well have been. However, just think how much those views that were imposed upon you shaped who you became?

Were you actually good at tennis, or did your parents want you to play? Were you actually good at English, or did your teacher just want you to try harder? Were you no good at netball, or was it just that other people were a bit better than you, or that you just needed time to learn?

Who knows how our lives are changed by such nonsense, based on pure opinion. Its as if someone sees you swimming along, doing alright by yourself, and drops a big dollop of unpleasantness in front of you. So you don't swim that way anymore, you go a different way.

Don't get me wrong - there are absolutely genuine examples where kids shine and excel with natural ability. But that isn't most of us. So we forge ahead, bolstered by what we are told we are good at, held back by fear of what we think we can't do.

So our ocean of opportunity shrinks. It becomes a sea, then it gets landlocked and before we know it, we have a pool. Some people have just a puddle as so many people throw stuff in their way, they can barely move. But most of us get left with a pool.

So I say this - if you are so hemmed in by what other people think of you, or think you should do, or shouldn't do, then get the cleaners in. Get that rubbish cleaned our of your pool!! Give yourself control back. If you only have a puddle to paddle in, you need to. The world is your swimming pool, but it could still be a big one!!:)

Gran Canaria 2014 - LBD

First trip to Gran Canaria, and I fell in love. What a place! Beautiful beaches, lovely food, friendly people. It was the start of something wonderful.

Here is me in the obligatory LBD:

Why do I put on weight when it makes me miserable? :(

I'm miserable when I gain weight. There, I said it. I'm a real grump when I feel sluggish and bloated and unhealthy. You might therefore, and quite rightly, ask why I have done this to myself. A very good question.

Lets consider that for a moment shall we? I have done this to myself because food tastes great. Well, fattening food does, fast food does, snack food does. Lettuce does not. That's the truth of it. So my first considered response is I have done this because I love food.

I could leave it there, simples. Alas, its not so simple. Nothing ever is it? No, not simple at all, far from it.

The truth of the matter, for me, is this. I do love food, yes, first answer is true enough. Its the self control over how much, how often and what that is the problem. You can still love food and be slim. Plenty of people are.

My problem is that I am either in control or I am not. I am either on a diet or I am not. I never, repeat never, consider healthy eating to by my lifestyle. I'm on a calorie controlled diet, going to a diet club (insert practically everyone at some point in my life), pointing, food optimising, portion controlling, cutting out carbs - whatever diet, its a diet.

When I stop noticing what I eat, I eat what and when I want. I always go mad, no discipline in sight. The result? Massive weight gain. Which is horrendous for my appearance, my confidence, my ability to fit in my clothes and now I am bloody miserable.

I need to get a grip. I keep saying "diet starts tomorrow", but to quote the cliche - tomorrow never comes. I need to replace tomorrow with now, today.

I wonder to myself how I can even consider stuffing food down my chops when it makes me feel this way, its like something takes over me. All I can do at this point is diet. Nothing else for it.

The issue is finding a way when this weight is off again, of not doing this to myself again!! Solve that puzzle and I've cracked it. Right now, I'm (not so little) Miss Grumpy!! :(

My Travels in Barcelona

This year,  I decided to book my other half a romantic break. After perusing the reviews and travel sites, I decided on Barcelona. Now, whilst it is possible to be romantic - its a beautiful city, its so much more than that. We stayed on La Ramblas, next to the Gothic quarter, and it was amazing, in your face and totally authentic.

We were more towards the middle of La Ramblas, so just a couple of minutes walk from the monument and the harbour.

Of course no trip to Barcelona could be complete without the obligatory visit to the Nou Camp stadium or Camp Nou as the Spanish actually call it. When in Spain...

Then there is the Gaudi masterpiece, that is still being worked on, Sagrada Familiar - started in 1882. Crikey! How breathtaking though.

Our hotel being on La Ramblas, we tried some of the local Tapas - very nice. The actual area though is mega busy and bustling - exciting and a bit intimidating all at the same time.

The port is beautiful and catching it at sunset is a must. Some of the yachts further around are out of this world - how the other half live.

For our final night, as we had watched the sunset, we opted for pink mojitos.

We loved this city break - but its not for the faint hearted. Its one of those places that you remember forever. One off the bucket list for sure!

Gran Canaria 2017 - Our Place in the Sun

This year we headed off to Gran Canaria for our fourth trip. Its become my favourite place ever, even more so than Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. There is just something about the area we visit that we love.

It always feel safe and friendly. The weather is great, the sea is powerful and amazing, the beach is out of this world. The food is great, you can eat for reasonable money, and the drinks are lovely. We have been all inclusive, bed and breakfast and most recently self catering, and its just fabulous.

This year we stayed in what was called a "bungalow". It was fab but it wasn't a bungalow - it was upstairs and downstairs!

It was mega - our own private little terrace, a balcony upstairs too and right next the pool - heated too!

The food and drink was amazing. First night - chinese chow mein. Yum.

With wine of course - rude not to.

We even found a turtle pool! Aren't they fab? Loved them.

The sunsets in Gran Canaria are beautiful. It goes a little chilly at night due to the wind, but its lovely after a hot day.

Canarian potatoes at Tapas bars are a must. My favourite.

Accompanied by Long Island Ice Tea which is lush.

I just never get bored of this place. The palm trees, the lighthouse, the shops, the bars, the restaurants, the people - perfect place.

  • My Travels in Gran Canaria - 2016

So 2016 saw us once more in the very wonderful Gran Canaria. I love having a glass of wine as the sun gets low in the sky as you get the most beautiful light - so romantic.

It began at the airport with Boofle and of course the obligatory pint! Never is it the time other than holidays when its like 8am!

Our hotel was right next to the beach and the lighthouse, and at night the pool was lit up and beautiful.

It may not look hot, but its so deceptive. It can be cloudy and dull one minute, then blistering hot the next. I love the variation in how it makes the sea look. Some days it looks murky grey, then it looks crystal blue.

I loved our holiday. We had so many laughs and hugs and of course selfies! Has to be done.

This was our first time in GC not all inclusive. Breakfast was included but not lunch and evening. So we sampled the food - wow.

Tapas is a huge thing in GC. So many choices! So we tried a few - spanish potatoes, bruschetta, croquettes - absolutely gorgeous.

The beach is beautiful. The weather makes such a difference. In the morning its usually a bit cloudy, then the sun tends to burn through making it bright white and blue. Then storms come and go. Wonderful place.

GC is just the best - my favourite place in the world.

My retro single of the week - Mr Brightside - The Killers
