My choice for this week's retro single of the week is a true classic - Guns N' Roses with 'Sweet Child O' Mine'.
This is one of those songs that sounds as good now, as when it was released as a single back in 1988. Guns N' Roses are one of the all time great rock bands, but back in 1988, they were new and upcoming. 'Sweet Child O' Mine' featured on their debut album - Appetite for Destruction, in 1987.
The single reached number 6 in the UK singles chart, but hit the number 1 spot in their native America. I say native, but a claim to fame here is that the guitarist from GNR - Slash, shares the same home town as myself!!
Sweet Child is one of those songs that you recognise instantly from its distinctive guitar riff intro. Axl's vocals and the sheer quality of the instrumental make this song one of the all time greats. Hard to think it was their debut album, as on a recent holiday this was a still a staple in a great rock bar. Stood the test of time and sounds as fantastic as ever.
Guns N' Roses are still going, with Axl even fronting for ACDC when lead singer Brian Johnson was unable to perform in 2016. One of the biggest rock bands to come from the 80's and 90's when they dominated in an era that wasn't really about rock, they have managed to survive. With the exception of one or two other notable songs though, its Sweet Child for me every time as their best work.
Go take a listen, remind yourself how great it still is or take a first listen - great song. For more of my singles of the week, retro choices and loads more check out My Music page here. Happy listening :)
