I would love to be a Salvage Hunter!!

I would so love to do this for a living. Finding hidden gems, bagging a bargain. My absolute dream job.

I would do a Kirsty Allsop - checking out what's gone into skips for starters - vintage doors, mirror frames, stuff you can upcycle. Fabulous.

Then there's the bigger scale stuff that the proper salvage hunters do. Going to storage yards and stately homes to find items that you can do up and sell for £'s profit. Iron benches, church pews - you name it.

There is just something appealing about making something disregarded into something special.

The only issue is you need an income or a solid amount of savings to live off in case you don't find a bargain or you can't sell it on. I'm not quite there yet, but its where I want to be.

I want to be a salvage hunter!!

Palm Trees and Sunshine!

I just came across this photo in my hol pics from last year. Given that this year's first holiday is over, I thought this might inspire me for the next one. Just imagine lazy days in the lovely sunshine, with nothing to do other than have a cocktail!!

This was taken looking up at the sky, through the palms trees that were swaying in the gentle breeze. It was that hazy blue sky that you only get when its really warm. Hopefully we will get some lovely days in the UK this year too if the weather forecasters can be trusted.

Which do you think is best? The UK when we get the weather or holidays abroad? Drop me a comment if you like :)

AJ vs Klitschko - Wow

So tonight was Anthony Johnson versus Wladamir Klitschko. Similar height, build and weight, it was a hard one to call. At the start, it looked like it was AJ, then the tables turned, and the odds swung.

At points they both looked like they were about to go down, and indeed they both did. It was clear that whilst AJ is the younger fighter, Klitschko is a true fighter, who just kept going.

I have never felt so torn between who I was willing on. Obviously AJ is our boy, our national treasure, so we had to be behind him. But the other guy was fighting so hard, and with such heart, it was impossible not to respect him and admire him.

The longer it went on, the more emotional we all got. My step daughter watched it with us - her first big fight. What a first fight it was!!

I am so glad for Anthony, but I feel so much respect for Klitschko - they have both earned my respect. The winner is irrelevant - at 41, Wladamir can continue to feel the champion he is. However, we have entered a new era - AJ is the new champion.

What a fight!!

Dream Big

Life is short, too short. Its important to have hopes and dreams or what's it all for? You could easily watch the news these days and become down and disheartened, thinking, wrongly, that the world is a terrible place where only bad things happen.

Lets make no mistake - bad things do happen.

So when it comes to hopes and dreams, you can hope for the best, and that's great. When it comes to dreams, you should always dream big. There is no point having small dreams.

If its a dream, then aim high. Shoot for the stars, reach for the moon, climb that mountain. If you aim for the pinnacle of the highest peak, you might only reach the midway point. But if you had only aimed for the foothills, would you have even tried to climb that mountain? Surely halfway to the top is better than staying at the bottom and not trying?

I'm talking about your dreams here. I'm not saying aim to be a brain surgeon as that's most likely unrealistic for most of us. I am saying that you should consider what it is that would make you feel fulfilled, give you satisfaction or happiness.

Maybe its running a 5K for the first time when you are a couch potato. Maybe its writing a book if you've got a good story. Maybe its getting on a plane to somewhere new. Or maybe its a career change, or a house move. Whatever it is, imagine it, picture it, dream it. Dream big.

You might need some small steps to make progress. But its the taking part that counts. Dream big. :)

What did you want to be when you grew up?

G has some homework to do this weekend. She has to decide what she wants to do when she grows up. Her list currently looks like this:

  • beauty technician
  • nail artist
  • hair dresser
My list when I was 11 looked more like this:
  • Journalist
  • Pathologist
  • Writer
  • Architect
What did you want to be when you grew up?

If I could be anything I would be....

,,,a female version of Kevin McCloud. He has my dream job presenting Grand Designs, but is also a bit of an entrepreneur being a designer, and owning a housing company. That would be my absolute dream.

However, there are other things I would love to do too. Here is my list:

  • Finding houses for people like on A Place in the Sun
  • Looking a auctioned homes like they do on Homes Under the Hammer
  • Finding the perfect home in the UK for folks like on Location, Location, Location
Better still, I would love to be the one buying the homes at the auctions, doing them up and growing a housing portfolio. Even better still, I would love to have a plot of land to design my own home.

Next, I would love to get into writing of some sort:
  • Freelance journalist
  • Autobiographer
  • Magazine editor
  • Author of a book
I have always wanted to write. I love to read, and ever since I was a child, I had this notion of being a writer. Maybe this one is something I could start small on.

Finally, here are my more obscure things I would love to do, even just for a short period:
  • Photographer - snapping away, would love this
  • Work in or own a garden centre - I love growing things
  • Designer - I would love to design clothes for real women, like me, with curves
  • Florist - working with beautiful flowers all day - lovely
  • Full time comper - this requires winning stuff. Not happening at the moment!!!
So, all in all, I think I am more the creative type. However, its good to think through what you want to do, just in case that chance ever presents itself. I shall certainly not miss it if it heads my way any time soon. Here's to being Eternally Hopeful!!

Back from hols and back to reality :(

Back from holiday early this morning. Back with a load of washing and a load of great memories!! Lots of photo's to download, and also a few more pounds to shed!!

Holidays are fantastic. Coming back home? Not so much except I do love my house of course!! So, the mission is to get everything unpacked, washed, ironed, and back away as soon as possible.

There is nothing worse than still seeing bikini's in the washing basket a week after getting home. Just depressing.

So what to do about being back to reality? How to counter the post holiday blues?

Well first on the list is to get this weight off. I am not going on holiday feeling that there is a danger of being harpooned again. So for the next holiday, I shall be at goal weight. That means losing somewhere in the region of 2 - 3 stone from now.

Today is Friday, and come Monday, I am back on the straight and narrow - back to the gym, back to eating healthily. This may seem like foolishness but I am determined to get back into my fitness training straight away this time.

The only thing I can guarantee happening if I don't get straight back on that wagon is that I gain more weight. I slack off the diet, become virtually sedentary and its a vicious circle, well not this time it isn't!

So that's the first bit. Next up? Booking another one of course!! No better cure for the post holiday blues. Now, where shall we go next? Hmmmmm.... :)

The Worst Bits of Winter Sun Holidays

So fresh back from a lovely holiday, coming home is always nice in some ways. But here are my worst bits of taking a sunshine holiday in winter:

    • Having to put the heating on constant when you get home
    • Being cold going to the airport and coming back
    • Having to pack winter woollies in your hand luggage to change into
    • Having to put your coat back on
    • Packing your skimpy clothes when its cold
    • Unpacking your skimpy clothes when its cold!!
    • Trying to buy sunshine clothes in winter
    • Being pasty white on arrival!
    • Packing your sunshine clothes away again - quite depressing that!!
    • Piling weight on right before the festive season!!

The Best Bits of Winter Sun Holidays

Fresh back from a bit of winter sun, courtesy of the Canary Islands, its a bit nippy on our return!! The heating is turned up, the washing machine is on, the cases are almost unpacked. So why do we put ourselves through it? Sometimes it all seems a bit stressful and a lot of faff, but here are my best bits of a winter sun break:

    • The temperature obviously - 24-29 degrees on average in the Canaries in November
    • The beaches - nothing like lying on a beach when its sub zero back home!
    • The views - the Canary islands are beautiful  mountains, beaches, adventures
    • The restaurants - varied and you can find really good food for great prices
    • The prices - much much cheaper than the UK for food and drink
    • The relaxation - get a massage and chill out
    • Getting in the pool - it feels amazing in winter
    • Splash in the sea - great waves make it exciting just having a paddle!!
    • Watersports - the Canaries are famous for its surfing and watersports
    • The landmarks - volcanoes, lighthouses - you name it
    • Eating Alfresco - this just does not happen in winter in the UK!
    • Beach picnics - pack your lunch and off you go!
    • Not having to rush - nowhere to rush to, take your time
    • Read a book or several uninterrupted!!
    • No beach sellers - its rare that you get any hassle at all
    • No tights required!!

I really want an apartment in Gran Canaria

We went to Gran Canaria last year. That was the second time we had been. The first time was in 2014 when we went to San Augustin. Last year, we went to Maspalomas. This year, we went to Melanores.

In 2014 we went in April, and last year it was October. April was windier and a bit cooler of an evening, but the weather in the daytime was beautiful on both occasions. This year we headed off in November, and it was lovely weather - totally beach weather for the whole week!

San Augustin was more beautiful - the beach, and the scenery, but Maspalomas is much livelier - it has a lighthouse, loads of bars and things to do. I love both to be honest!! This year, we discovered a whole part we hadn't found before - loads more restaurants, a live music bar - fabulous.

Ever since we got back from the second visit, I wanted to go back. We booked up again as we couldn't wait. A different hotel again this time half board rather than all inclusive.  Its just so amazing and why would anyone not enjoy it? The weather is just amazing at times of the year when you are limited to where you can go. We have been each year - 2014,2015 and 2016, but once a year is just not enough.

We have just been again this time in an apartment, but I want a place there.

I want an apartment. I keep imagining just deciding to go and stay there, on a whim, to our own place, with our own stuff. This is my dream, and sometimes, just sometimes, your dreams can come true.

I really do hope so :)

Perseus & Medusa - beautiful moments

We are very lucky to live in a very green city, with parks and beautiful gardens and lakes nearby. We went for a stroll a few weeks back at one of these, and there is a statue or Perseus, holding the head of Medusa the Gorgon.

Looking back through my photos today, I was taken by how beautiful these pictures are, so I wanted to share them with you.

The sun was starting to go down, and it was reflecting off the water so beautifully. I love greek mythology, so mysterious, so exciting. The statue is amazing, but this was it at its best.

Dance like noone is watching :)

I read this yesterday. When you are dancing, do it like no-one is watching and just let yourself go.

You will really enjoy it if you just feel the rhythm and let all the stresses and strains flow out of you.

My recommendation for today is to dance like no one is watching. Just pop some music on and go for it. It will make you feel good so what's stopping you? :)

Pre-holiday Selfie - this will be me again tomorrow :)

We flew out on our recent holiday at 6am. This is me at the airport at 4am. Much tired!

Its one of the only occasions as well where it is not only permissable, but is in fact entirely normal and acceptable to have a drink of the alcoholic persuasion!!

At least my hair looks shiny even if I do look like I'd had no sleep, because I'd had no sleep! :)

This will be me again tomorrow :) Can't wait x

Single of the Week - Kasabian - You're in Love with a Psycho'

My new single of the week is from Kasabian with 'You're in Love with a Psycho'.

Ok, not the most politically correct way to refer to someone, but hey - its a great song, so lets just move right on past that.. Its just great to have this Brit band back on the music scene as far as I am concerned. Its been too long.

So, Kasabian first came together back in 1997. They are from Leicester, and they have released five studio albums, with their sixth outing For Crying Out Loud being released this year. Now I love some of their older stuff, particularly the tracks from their album West Ryder PauperLunatic Asylum, but having heard this track I'm excited to hear this album.

'In Love with a Psycho' is what I would describe as a grower. I heard it first, and it didn't immediately hook me if I'm honest. It took a few listens, but then it seemed to stick. Now I find myself walking around singing it constantly - and I absolutely love it!

Kasabian are a rock band, but this song has a bit of a softer feel to it somehow - not pop, just a softer style - not so angry. The video, if you can get past the stereotype stuff, is actually funny. Especially with it featuring Noel Fielding! Very silly, but very funny.

So the boys are back. Its been 3 long years since their last new stuff, and its overdue. Back with a bang with this though - brilliant stuff.

Go take a listen and let me know what you think. You can find loads more singles of the week and more over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

    What I'm Watching This Week

    • Billions. Up to date now on series 2, and its still fantastic. Chuck and Wendy still estranged, and Ax down on his luck deal wise - lots of twists and turns and intrigue. I love this program, so clever, such dialogue - you just never see what comes next. Brilliant stuff, and as for the cast - perfect choice of leads Damian Lewis as Ax is mesmerising, his wife Lara played by Malin Åkerman is the epitome of cool. Then there is Chuck played by Paul Giamatti, and wife Wendy played by Maggie Siff. Whoever cast for this series needs rewarding - brilliant.

    • A Place in the Sun has become quite the addiction is our home. Along with other home related favourites, but this one is in the top spot, not least as we are soon headed off on holiday! I love the idea of a place in the sun, and watching what you can get for your money keeps me captivated and hopeful. One day...

    • Broadchurch. Well series 3 has not disappointed. Cleverly bringing in a new storyline, whilst weaving the original one into the plot. Once again, the actors in this intelligent and deeply emotional show are so convincing and talented that you forget you are watching TV. The plotline has left virtually everyone under suspicion, and previous victims keep appearing. Who the devil done it? Not even a clue so far.

Well, didn't get to goal weight and a week to go :(

So its just over a week until my holiday - off to Gran Canaria and very excited!! However, what I am far from happy with is my weight.

Normally, in 6 weeks or so, I can get close to target. A few times I have got lower, a few times I have missed by a couple of pounds. This time though, something has happened - the weight won't budge.

At first I just thought it was a blip, and that it would start coming off again. It didn't, it hasn't. That means that this time, I am somewhere in the region of 12 pounds over. That means that my middle, which is usually flat and toned for hols, is far from it.

This means a change of the clothes I usually pack. Bodycon are usually the order of the day, but this time I think with the exception of day one and two, when I might get away with it, just, that I need to pack something more forgiving altogether.

I have been so upset and dejected by this, and wracking my brains as to why my body won't let go of the weight. I'm not obese, but I'm not thin either - i'm in the normal to overweight range, but I could do with a stone and a half off to get to the size I want to be. That is usually where I get to when I diet and exercise.

I have done nothing different this time, but the results I usually get have not been successful. On one week, following the 3 day diet which is intense, which usually sees me drop 6 pounds or so, I actually gained weight. Not losing would have been bad, but gaining? How the hell did that happen?

I am still at a loss. I have determined that I am still going to have a great holiday, but when I get back I need to sort this out. Not only sort it, but I want to real actual goal. If anyone has any good advise they can share, or if this has happened and you know what the reason may be, please get in touch!!

Gonna get me a 'Sweat Stash'!!!

Had this great inspiration today. A 'sweat stash'!.

What is that you might be asking yourself? A sweat stash is this - each time you stick to your diet for a whole day - whack a coin in the jar. Each pound you lose - whack a coin in the jar. Each time you go to the gym - bosh - another coin in the jar. The harder you work, the bigger the reward you pop in the box.

Now, depending on the budget available to you, it could be 10p, it could be a £1 each time. It doesn't matter. The point is to watch those coins mount up!!

What a great visual way to keep you motivated!! Definitely going to give this a go! See how much I reach in 5 weeks!
