My Book of the Month - Dead Lake by Darcy Coates

I have never read anything by Darcy Coates before, so when I chose Dead Lake, it was a bit of an unknown entity. Billed as a supernatural thriller,  I can honestly say I was not disappointed.

When Sam heads to her uncle's remote cabin by the lake, her intention being to paint some new material for her forthcoming show, she gets more inspiration than she could ever have imagined.

Isolated, exhausted and tired, Sam tries to find motivation to paint, but somehow the images she produces don't quite seem to be her own....

This is a spooky tale 100%. I was reading this on a windy dark night, and I made sure more than once to check the doors were locked. It was that tense, and that is a rare find!

Sam sets out to find out just what is happening, having been completely spooked when she sees a man on the dock. She wasn't expecting anyone to be around. What makes matters worse is when she hears on the radio of all the missing persons cases in the vicinity.

With no phone signal, when she then finds her car has also been tampered with, Sam decides to call for help - the nearby ranger station. Cue a desperate race between Sam and her pursuer, as she uncovers grisly discoveries and finally unravels the mystery.

This is quite a short read, but the pace is breathtaking and it doesn't let up on the tension and suspense. A good read, and I shall definitely be heading for more of Darcy's output in the near future.

I would rate this a good 7 out of 10. The tension and suspense were great, but I would have liked a little bit more background on the main character Sam, as it was hard to attach with her. I also would have liked to know more about the perpetrator. Granted that would have made it a longer read, but a little more would have just filled it out that bit more. Great short read, recommended.

Today's Reasons to be Cheerful post

So, its almost midnight, but still it is Monday so I shall make this one a quick one!!

Reasons to be cheerful for today then - its Monday, and I am no longer working, so I do not have that horrible Monday morning feeling to contend with.

Yes, I have lots to keep me busy, lots to do, and I am still trying to earn an income, whilst not yet actively looking for work. I am cleaning and decluttering and selling what I no longer want or use.

So, there is no reason to have the monday blues. Secondly today I have watched some great movies - I have watched The Maid's Room which is very good. and I have also watched Pride and Glory.

I enjoy good movies it makes me escape for an hour or two. Me and my dog have had lots of cuddle time today, which has also been lovely and I feel happy :)

My new Retro Single of the Week - Stiltskin - Inside

For my retro single of the week this week I have chosen a one hit wonder from Stiltskin with the classic rock hit 'Inside'.

Stiltskin were a rock band from the UK. They released 'Inside' back in 1994 and it reached the number 1 spot in the UK singles chart.

It was one of those songs that was distinctive and instantly recognisable and it should have been the beginning of their careers. Unfortunately, they didn't follow up it up with any singles that came even close to the success of this one, only having one top 40 hit from then until now.

Stiltskin the band actually split up for a period, before reforming in the mid 2000's. However, this rock number still remains the one they were known for.

If you have never heard this, its well worth taking a listen. The intro, the rock, the sheer power of it and how it goes soft to heavy is just perfection.

That is my choice for this week, but if you want more check out my previous singles of the week, retro choices and loads more over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

New Word of the Week - Chicanery

Chicanery

  • trickery or deception by quibbling or sophistry: He resorted to the worst flattery and chicanery to win the job.

  • a quibble or subterfuge used to trick, deceive, or evade.

  • fraud, deception, knavery.

  • evasion.

Fitness begins tomorrow :)

Starting tomorrow, I am going to be going to the gym. A lot. Its reached that point where its nearly the end of January, and I have not been as good as I should have been.

I've kind of dieted, took the dog for a few walks and really cut back on the alcohol, but I haven't really gone for it exercise wise. I need to.

I have about 7 weeks until my tattoo and just short of 3 months until my holiday. I need to get my legs toned, lose the fat and get in shape.

The plan for this week is this:

  • Gym x 4 times
  • Swim x 1 times
  • Squats every day
  • Abs every day
  • Push ups and tricep dips every day
  • Burpees - alternate days
I keep craving chocolate and wine and generally everything fattening and bad for me. I give in, I indulge and then I look in the mirror at my body and regret it. I need to find my will power. I will. I have to.

Single of the Week - Rag 'n' Bone Man - Human

This week I have chosen the brilliant single from Rag 'n' Bone Man - 'Human'.

To begin with, obviously this artists real name isn't Rag 'n' Bone man, its actually Rory Graham. He is English and comes from Sussex.

He has been around a little while on the music scene, but this is his first actual solo single. His debut album is set for release in March.

'Human' is an unusual and really original song. Its a bit bluesy, a bit indie, a bit soul, a little bit dance all sort of melded together. His vocals are powerful and gravelly, and it instantly grabs you.

I was really surprised when I saw what he looked like - his voice has a real richness and depth that you wouldn't necessarily match with his appearance. He doesn't look like someone with a great voice if you follow me, but boy does he!!

This is a great song. If you haven't heard it, you should take a listen. Definetely a keeper and one to look back on still being great years from now.

For loads more singles of the week, retro choices and loads more music stuff, check out My Music page here. Happy listening ;)

today's reasons to be cheerful post :)

Its time for today's reasons to be cheerful, and first of all, it is Friday!! Now, I am currently not working at least not in the traditional sense, but for my other half he is home, we can enjoy the weekend together, so that is fab!!

It means a lie in tomorrow too - fabulous. Further, we have lots planned this weekend. Nothing overly exciting but still lots to do and I am in the frame of mind where rather than being overwhelmed by this, I feel positive and can do.

I finally managed to get my diet head on and got my backside moving today. I avoided temptation and managed to get done everything I wanted to do including cleaning my father in laws flat as he is old and not too good health wise, so I did a good deed.

I took doggly for a walk so got some fresh air. I packed a lot in and further, I have stayed off the alcohol all week, tonight included, so I am feeling healthy.

Another good day :)

My Perfect Pictures - Icy Waters

The snow inspired me to take this photo. icy lake, snow on the ground, sun shining. beautiful.:

I took this picture last winter 2014. We had the snow, then it froze, crystallizing the snow. When the sun came out, I captured this amazing snap. Beautiful.

Its far too mild this year to expect these scenes this Christmas, but it is a beautiful moment to look back on.

I Want a Tattoo!!

Ever since I turned 30 I have wanted a tattoo. That date came and went some years back!! Still the urge persists. I already have a tattooist lined up. The issue now is firstly, what to have?

I fluctuate between dragons, roses, skulls, lilies and fairies, and combinations of. Then there is the location. Originally, I wanted one on my left thigh. Then it occured to me that it would be showing if I wore shorts, so I decided that it might be better to have one weave over my hip, finishing at the top of my thigh, going up to the bottom of my back.

I keep changing my mind on that now too, as it occurs to me that my thighs need to be very toned first, so I would need to be at my goal weight first.

But then it occurs to me that if I do get to my goal weight then have my tattoo started, then I will then be out of action for a while exercise wise. So what to do?

I think I need to decide on the what first, then the where, and then finally the when!! Decisions decisions. I have now turned 40 however.  These things take time!!

However, I am booked in for my first session on 20th March so now the pressure is on ! It is going to happen this year :)

  • salaciousness noun

What''s happening in the World this week

  • I can't go any further in my round up without making reference to Trump's inauguration. The man's speech was unusual - more like a voting rally speech than a President taking office. The singing was even odder - brave girl, but slightly awkward to listen to and a bit out of tune. Then there are the protests going on in the US and also here in Blighty. Troubled times ahead as countries fracture in their opinions. Brexit pales by comparison.

  • Man U played my home team Stoke City this week. Wayne Rooney scored to equalise, making him now Man U's highest ever goal scorer. Just a shame it was against Stoke, but hey ho. Well done Wayne.

  • It has snowed in Spain. Parts of Spain have been turned white for the first time in decades, and in some areas for over 100 years!!

  • My favourite story of this week is a bit of fun. The wonders of the world made out of lego is going on show at an exhibition in Nottingham. The Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef and Stone Henge are amongst those made. Absolutely brilliant.

Productive Day - clean house, clean eating, happy dog :)

Have you ever woke up in the morning and instead of being all like "omg its time to get up" and all morose and tired and grumpy, you are the opposite? I woke up this morning fired up and ready to roll.

Cue a very productive day indeed. Today I dusted the house from top to bottom, behind, under, in between - you name it I was at it. Feather duster over doorways, light fittings, pictures - nothing was left.

Next up it was hoovering the whole house. Once again, going around the edges, doing the stairs, under tables and chairs and furniture.

I bleached the kitchen trays, cleaned the sides, bleached the worktops and the plug holes. I got all the washing done, and organised the cupboards.

I sorted the shoe rack, then organised the shoes upstairs. I cleaned my boots. I cleaned the hob. I cleaned the bathrooms thoroughly. I cleared out empty boxes and odd flip flops. Quite how I came home with one flip flop I cannot say, I sure didn't hop anywhere!!

I photographed my latest wardrobe clear out to sell. I downloaded my photos and organised them into folders.

I took my dog for a walk, and we played and had cuddles. I took her to get a new lead as her not very old one has frayed. She loves her new one.

I made two types of home made soup - carrot and coriander, and leek and potato and very scrummy it is too.

I did little things like empty the bin, clean the bin and freshen it with zoflora, likewise the drains. I even cleaned the light switches!

I cleaned windows, I cleaned the glass in the doors. I worked hard today and it felt so good.

I feel content, Coco the dog is happy and asleep now, and the other half was very impressed when he got home. Good day today :)

Today I shall mostly be cleaning :)

Its that time of the month, one month on from Christmas where I do my deep clean. Yes, I always clean the house and yes, its always tidy, but sometimes you just have to go top to bottom leaving no sock unturned!!

Today is that day. I shall be bleaching. I shall be dusting, I shall be organising, washing, scrubbing, hoovering - you name it.

By the time I am finished, it shall be once again pristine. I love it when everything sparkles :)

Introducing my new baby - Coco the Puppy dog :)

A few months ago, I wanted a dog. I have always wanted a dog, but my partner took some convincing. Suddenly, he changed his mind and now we have our puppy.

Here she is:

She's grown a lot since we had her, but she's still my baby and still very cute. She's also a furry bundle of fun and teeth!! Sharp little teeth that she loves to nip us with at the moment!!

Already, she's a full member of the family though and I just would not be without her. She's my little girl and she's going to be completely mummy mard let me tell you. This little furry bundle is certainly not lacking in cuddles and love.

Our house is suddenly full of toys and treats and I wouldn't have it any other way. Welcome to our world Coco x

Today's Reasons to be Cheerful post

Time for today's reasons to be cheerful post. Firstly, did you see that amazing sunset this evening? Wow. Also, I do find that a day with bright sunshine, be it cold or warm or blazing hot is beautiful and makes me feel good and positive.

Today I suddenly decided to get on with things. Just little things, but those that I had been putting off. Now I am motoring again and feel like I am getting things done. It feels good rather than constantly thinking about what I have to do.

I seem to have my head on right today. I am filled with ideas, how to get things organised, how to save pennies, what I need to do, what I need to get. I feel confident and content and its all good.

I posted a load of parcels which felt quite therapeutic. It takes so long to wrap things, get everything photographed and listed, but it feels rewarding when its done.

I got home and I have prepped loads of veg to roast later for a healthy tea. I have also prepped all the veg to get on with making some hearty home made soup tomorrow. It feels good to be prepared.

Good day :)

Pandora Charm incentive

Chatting away about the woes of dieting, and the toughness of getting my behind to the gym, me and the other half got onto the topic of rewards.

As a joke, I said I might treat myself to a Pandora charm for each half stone milestone I reach. I do respond well to motivation like that. To my surprise, the other half, not known for his loving or supportive gestures it has to be said, suddenly said he would get me one too for each half stone! Wow!

So now I need to get planning for which ones I might buy. So far, I'm loving the Stiletto charm and the Handbag charm for two. Plus those with hearts on. Decisions decisions.

One charm I shall not be buying though, and woe betide anyone foolish enough to purchase for me when the time comes, is the 40 charm. Why on earth would I want to broadcast to the world that I have reached that particular milestone? Not a chance.

The Red Apple charm is gorgeous and actually quite apt for a diet theme. Wishing star charm is lovely and getting to my goal would be my wish. The sparkling leaves one would match my ring and earrings which I had for my birthday.

I like the Bear Hug and the Penguin family charms too. The pink pave charm is beautiful so is the lots of love charm. The Aries charm is quite personal to me. The sparkling butterfly charm is really pretty.  I like the S as well as that's my name!!

Back on the healthy food theme and there is a strawberry charm which is really cute. But I also like the castle and the Frog Prince charms - bit Fairy Tale time.

On a quite poignant note, there is a Cupcake and an elephant - quite a good combination to remind me what happens to my body when I eat cupcakes!!

So many to choose from and such a lovely way of remembering the journey to get to my goal weight and an incentive to firstly lose the weight, and secondly to keep it off!

The holiday grumps - smile will you!!

For most of us going on holiday means relaxing - eating, drinking, probably not moving that much - certainly no runs or gym sessions anyway. However, I am always fascinated by those that still look fabulous on the way home after a week or two all inclusive in the sun.

There are two groups of these types or so it appears to me. The first group, by far the minority, are those that are genetically lucky enough to actually eat what they want and not look like the pilsbury dough boy or girl (I am not one of these).

The there are the second group - this is those who don't indulge and pick and bit at fruit and healthy choices and steer clear of all the tasty nice stuff and hence don't really appreciate the true pleasure of the all inclusive (I am not one of these either).

The first group I envy, I think everyone does - who wouldn't want to just relax and not pile it on? Me for one. the second group I do admit I find intriguing. On the one hand, it annoys me immensely to see people unable to relax, still obsessively portion controlling and picking at tiny bits of food that wouldn't feed a mouse. For goodness sake why go on holiday if you are not going to enjoy yourself?

I get that for some people food and drink is not the be all and end all, and there are some who probably have jobs or lifestyles where they have to look good and I get that. Those are not the ones I am talking about. Those that exercise self control in such circumstances I admire. I can't exercise any self control on holiday as I have proved repeatedly, and I am not going to berate myself for it.

No, I mean those people that look glum. All the time. Skinny and miserable. They don't laugh, or join in with the entertainment, or get in the pool, or hit the water slides. No, they just skulk about, eating fruit and muesli and drinking water and looking well, damned miserable.

I always seem to wind up next to them waiting for them to pick over an egg white omelette or for their wholemeal toast - one whole round, to toast on the rotating toaster. I am quite a social person - I always am polite and well mannered, and I always open an opportunity for a bit of a chat in the queue with the person next to me. Not with these types though - ooh dear. I've tried and failed and have learned my lesson.

Bright bubbly types just don't do it - don't even try to engage. They will burst your bubble these folks. I don't mind if people don't want to enjoy themselves with food and drink, but for heaven's sake break a smile at some point on your hols. Life is for living!!

Yes, you look a-mazing in the goddess dress, all in white looking like Venus or someone, but good lord would it kill you to look like you are actually happy? What's the point of pouting about the place? Yeah, people might say - ooh you look nice, but they won't gravitate towards you and you won't have any stories to tell when you get home. You will just have your pics of you looking granted amazing, but with a face that would turn grown men to stone. Smile!!!!!! It won't kill you, and neither will a bread roll. Go on, go on go on go on go on !!!!!

Diet Disaster!!

I blew it this weekend. Suddenly I feel like all my plans to hit goal for holiday have hit the skids.

I feel bloated and horrible. I now have almost 2 stone to lose by the end of April. Talk about making it harder for myself! I should have been under the stone mark by now not heading upwards!!

Right. Get some perspective. I'm not ill, there is nothing wrong with me other than my weight being more than I want it to be.

So I start again. Properly. No cutting corners this time as this is getting ridiculous quite frankly.

Reboot and off I go again. :(

Harry Potter Tour - The Gates of Hogwarts

I tell you what, I don't know if I would dare go through these gates!

Big wrought iron things standing several feet higher than myself.

Guarded to both sides by some sort of gargoyle with big wings.

In actual fact, they look like Hogs with wings. Maybe that's the point - it is Hogwarts after all!!

Would you dare go through?

I had visions of them flying up into the air!!

Looking back - travels in Tunisia

This was the sunset from our balcony in Tunisia on our holiday in August 2014. Isn't it just beautiful?

It was so amazing. The sun reflecting back over the sea.

I was mesmerised and watched it set. With a lovely drink of course. I was on holiday!!

What amazed me the most, was how fast it went down and how quickly it went dark. Beautiful. Just wish I was still there. I could very easily do a Shirley Valentine and not come home you know. So tempting.

It is just so sad that its somewhere that people can no longer enjoy. I'm glad I got the chance.

M is for Mocha

Sometimes plain coffee just won't do. Sometimes you need a little more kick in your cocoa. So it had to be a Mocha for me. As Mocha's go, this was a beast.

The cup it came in was huge! It was like a bowl of Mocha. It took some drinking but my gosh it was gorgeous. All that was lacking was a giant slab of cake to go with it, but I had to sacrifice the cake or ruin all the hard work I have been putting in on the exercise and diet. The mocha itself was not exactly in keeping with the old diet, but you have to indulge sometimes!! Yum:)

New Shoes - first holiday

Here are my lovely new shoes from Vince Camuto. What do you think of these beauties then?

Being wedges, they are light weight, which is great for packing purposes but also much comfier than clunky ones.

I'm just hoping that I don't pay the price for not breaking them in first!! Hope they enjoy their first holiday! :)

Harry Potter Tour - "The Cupboard under the Stairs"

Possibly one of the most famous locations of the films - the terrible "Cupboard under the Stairs". So cruel when you think about it, but so exciting to see it!!

This was before we even got into the studios!! So exciting - well worth a visit :)

Apple Pie and Custard - ultimate comfort food!

I'm on a diet. I am trying to be healthy. I am also a human being and today I am hungry. Now, when you feel like this on a Sunday afternoon, sometimes, just sometimes, you have to give in to the urge. The urge took me to have an apple pie with english custard. And here it is:

Now does that not look divine?

All I can say in my defence is that it was worth it!!! Yum. x

My New Style

I have decided to change my style. Not completely - there are certain wardrobe staples I love too much.

However, as a woman the wrong side of 40 now, I feel its the right time to introduce new items to my repertoire. Those being :

  • Slouchy jumpers
  • Jodhpurs
  • camisole tops with jeans and woollies
  • high neck jumpers and opaque tights with tartan and corduroy skirts
Not sure when this is going to happen yet, but it will. I need a revamp :)
