My New Single of the Week - Bruno Mars - 24K Magic

My new single of the week is from Bruno Mars with his brilliant '24K Magic'.

I've long been a fan of Bruno Mars, he's such a talented singer, but this song in particular has really hooked me in. Its the lead single from his third album also called 24K Magic, and if this is anything to go by, the album is sure to be amazing!

24K is full of funk, very sassy, cool and sexy - a bit like the man himself, and instantly catchy. Its full of synth and a little bit disco and just absolutely unique.

Now there are those out there who think that music should be progressive, give us something new each time. I disagree. Yes, you need those songs, but you also need songs that are retro and throw back to previous influences but still make it fresh. This is a song that makes you feel good, makes you tap your foot and want to get up and dance. That's why its so great.

The video is the same - Bruno and his posse basically having a real good time in Las Vegas. Its all about glamour, partying, showing off the bling and the money - my view on that is if you've got it why not?

This is a song that sounds great, looks great and makes you feel good. What more do you want from a pop song!! What do you think of this song? Let me know, or go take a listen if you've not heard it yet.

If you want more, then why not check out My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

ACDC with Axl Rose live 2016

Earlier this year, we went to see ACDC. Shortly before the gig, we heard that the lead singer, Brian Johnson, had to pull out. He was to be replaced by none other than Guns n Roses front man - Axl Rose. For some ACDC purists, this was a disaster, and I was too a little concerned as I wanted the full ACDC rock experience. However, previously a huge GnR fan, I eventually thought - well, two birds with one stone!! We get both experiences combined. So off we toddled, and it was great.

The Exploding Chopping Board! - remember this?

Picture the scene. You come home from work and you start to do some cleaning. The radio is on, there is some great music playing, you are giving it some moves whilst you clean. I had cleaned the whole kitchen, and was just about to move the herbs to clean the work top and chopping board. I had washing piled and ready to go. I put a hot cloth on the chopping board when there was a crackling noise, loud. This then happened:

The entire glass chopping board exploded. When I say exploded, I mean literally shot everywhere - it disintegrated into millions of pieces.

For several seconds I could hear a ticking sound. It took me a moment to work out what it was. It was the pieces of glass dropping back from the ceiling and everywhere else it had exploded into. It was everywhere. It took me not far off an hour to pick up all the pieces and the following day I was still finding small shards.

I have no clue what happened. It was a proper chopping board and surely they should not just explode!!! Thankfully, I was far enough away from it that it didn't hurt me, but my god it shook me up!! The most annoying part? This happened after most of the cleaning was done!!!

Goodness its cold outside

It feels like winter suddenly arrived. The temperature has really dropped tonight. I have the heating on, fluffy slippers on, PJ's and dressing gown!!

I actually don't mind it though to be honest. It is nearly December - its just not right how mild it has been of late. I need to get my head into gear and start preparing for Christmas.

The change in temperature is finally waking me up to the fact that it is actually getting pretty close to the man in red putting in his annual appearance.

At the very least I need to start the list. Winter is here. Best hurry myself up me thinks!

My Epic Wardrobe Sort Out Part 2 - the end result

After 6 hours, yes, 6 whole hours, my wardrobe looked neat. It looked tidy and it looked organised.

A place for everything, and everything in its place.

I should have done this months ago!

Now the challenge it keeping it like this!!

The Epic Wardrobe Sort Out - Part 1

I had that head on me where I wanted to get stuff done. So I aimed myself at my wardrobe and this was the result:

Now when I decided to start this project, I thought I would just shuffle through my clothes, tidying it up, folding things neatly. I knew there were one of two items that had seen better days, and a few I wanted to get rid of.

What it turned into, as you can see, is removing everything from the wardrobe and the draws and going through it properly!! This was a big job. I underestimated the scale of it.

Check back tomorrow for how it ended up :)

Titanic forgotten

Whilst scrolling through what seemed to be endless channels with nothing at all on to watch (well nothing suitable for a 10 year old's company certainly) I stumbled upon Titanic.

Initially, I wasn't inspired at the thought of watching this as in my memory it's all a bit twee, but in the absence of anything else to watch, and feeling tired from a long walk in the fresh air, not to mention the Christmas cold I have at present, I stuck it on.

It took just minutes to be utterly absorbed. I had forgotten how perfect Kate Winslet's skin is (my own is a bit of a nightmare to say the least, especially in winter) and how beautiful the dresses she wore in it. I had forgotten what Leonardo DiCaprio looked like back then, as granted, he is still a good looking man, but by golly he has changed some!

The chemistry between the two is mesmerising, and the backdrop of the untimely demise of that unsinkable ship Titanic is nothing short of spectacular. I have been a bit of Titanic fan - the ship, not the film, for many years, and have been to Belfast where she was born, so watching it's end in this amazing visual film is in itself sad and yet fantastic at the same time. Its so bitter sweet. I find myself now hoping for a different ending, a happy ending, knowing there can never be one and that Titanic will lie for ever on her death bed at the bottom of the ocean.

A Look Back at My Week With Taylor Swift

My week with Taylor Swift is over. Its been fabulous. Its made me even more excited to go see her live in the summer, even though I am most likely outside of the age range for her usual fan group. It is for the benefit of my 9 year old step daughter though, so I have an excuse!!

All that remains to do now is to decide which of my 7 song choices is my top choice. So without further ado:

In at number 1: Blank Space
Number 2: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
Number 3: Shake it Off
Number 4: Everything Has Changed
Number 5: I Knew you were trouble
Number 6: 22
Number 7: Love Story

So Blank Space is my top Taylor song to date. That's it then. All done. Taylor - its been great.

Now then, who will be next? Decisions decisions. You can check out all my previous choices over at My Music page - just click here. :)

Back from holiday and feeling hungry!!

Back from holiday this evening. Back from 30 degrees and now back to the heating on and rain. Humpf.

Yes, I have eaten too much (yum), drunk a fair amount (cheers) and generally have a somewhat expanded girth on me but nevertheless, right now, I am sipping a glass of vino (red) and also a curry.

It has to be done. Nothing more likely to put a blue on your mood than coming back off holiday :)

A Look Back at My Week with Kate Bush

My Week with Kate Bush is at an end. Its been fabulous and has reminded me what a great artist Kate is. Some of my choices took me back in time to childhood - my dad was a big fan of Kate Bush.

So, to recap - here are my seven song choices from my week:

Babooshka
This Woman's Work
The Man with the Child in his Eyes
Hounds of Love
Don't Give Up
Running Up That Hill
Wuthering Heights

All that remains to do now is to decide which was my favourite so here goes:

Number 1:  Running Up That Hill
Number 2: Wuthering Heights
Number 3: The Man with the Child in his Eyes
Number 4: Don't Give Up
Number 5: This Woman's Work
Number 6: Babooshka
Number 7: Hounds of Love

So there we have it. The end of my week with Kate. What a talent. Now I just need to decide who is next!! If you can't wait, you can check out all my previous choices over at My Music page here.

A Look Back at My Week With Justin Timberlake

Its been a longer week with Justin Timberlake than planned as I got delayed due to moving house and my laptop konking out on me, but finally, the week is over. 7 days, 7 songs, and now to decide which of my 7 is in the top spot.

Here we go then:

In at number 1 it is : Sexy Back
Number 2: Take Back the Night
Number 3: Cry Me a River
Number 4: 4 minutes
Number 5: Mirrors
Number 6: Holy Grail
Number 7: Rock Your Body

My top choice is of course the fabulous Sexy Back. You can see the reviews by clicking on the links for each  one. It was hard to choose, as I actually do think JT is fab, and I love all 7 tracks this week.

But now its all over. The big question now is - who is next? Check back to find out, but in the meantime, you can find all my previous choices over at My Music page here. Happy listening :)

A Look Back at My Week with The Foo Fighters

My week with the Foo Fighters is over. Its been emotional. One thing I can say about the Foo Fighters music is that it's powerful stuff. It leaves you feeling quite exhausted as you get really into it!!

So, here are my seven singles from My Week with the Foos. All I need to do now is to decide which was my favourite and put them in order. So here they are in rank:

Number 1: All My Life
Number 2: Everlong
Number 3: Pretender
Number 4: My Hero
Number 5: Rope
Number 6: Best of You
Number 7: Learn to Fly

There we have it. My week with the Foo Fighters is finished. All that remains to be done now, is to decide who will be next!! If you can't wait, you can check out all my previous choices, along with loads more music over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

A look back at my week with The Stereophonics

My choice this week of who to spend seven days listening to was the Stereophonics. Each day, I chose a track to listen to, and then reviewed it. One week on, I can report that it has rekindled my love of this band, and piqued my curiosity for their albums, some of which are unfamiliar to me. Some of their music is now going to be a permanent fixture on my own playlists.

So the seven songs, whilst all great in different ways now need to be put in order of which I rank the highest (click the link for the full review for each). This is how they fared:

In at number 1: Dakota
Number 2: It Means Nothing
Number 3: Mr Writer
Number 4: Pick a Part That's New
Number 5: Maybe Tomorrow
Number 6: Local Boy in a Photograph
Number 7: The Bartender and the Thief

It's with a little sadness that I say goodbye to this fantastic rock band from Wales. Its been fantastic. It has re-opened my ears to the songs I remember, and how great they still sound, and has also given me the chance to listen to some new (old) music that I have now fallen in love with.

For more on The Stereophonics, and other bands and music, please visit My Music page. I am quite new to this blogging stuff, but each week I shall be adding more to my pages so you will always find something new to listen to.

If you have any suggestions for who I should spend a week with next (musically speaking of course) just pop me a comment and let me know! Or just join in with me and listen to my song choices each day. It's all good fun. Happy Listening x

Waistband getting tighter now - happy days :)

I like the fact that once I am away on holiday, I can just not give a damn what I am eating and drinking. I like that fact.

What I don't like so much, is when the lovely clothes I have taken with me start to show the strain!! 3 days in and waistbands start to distinctly tighten.

3 days in, I can get away with it still. Its once I'm past the half way point that things start to expand!!

Hopefully, my dresses will still fasten at this point and I can continue to merrily trough!! :)

A look back at my week with Beyonce

It's the end of My Week with Beyonce. Each day, I chose one track to listen to and reviewed it here.  At the end of the week, I can report that Beyonce is fabulous. I have always liked her stuff, but I have never had an album of hers, and have only listened to her on the radio. Now, after listening to her for a week, I can truly say I have a new found love of her music. She is fabulous. The songs I chose were very different, some old and some new.

Beyonce is just the fourth artist / band I have chosen so far for my week with project, and I have already added several of the tracks I have chosen to my playlists as permanent features. It is an absolute joy to find such great music and I am thoroughly enjoying spending some time really getting to know these artists and their work, albeit only a snapshot of seven songs.

So now I have to rank the seven Beyonce tracks I have listened to this past week. So here are my seven in order of my preference:

In at Number 1:  XO
Number 2: Love on Top
Number 3: Single Ladies
Number 4: Crazy in Love
Number 5: Beautiful Liar
Number 6: If I Were a Boy
Number 7: Bootylicious

So my week with Beyonce is at the end. Once again, the choice now is who next? Who to choose, who to choose?!

For more of my previous choices and singles of the week, check out My Music page here. Happy Listening :)

Remember the Viking longboat?

Back in October 2014, I made a longboat for G's school project. She went back to school this week after Christmas, and proudly announced that my longboat is still on display!

I'm very proud.

Word of the Week - Rapacity

Rapacity

given to seizing for plunder or the satisfaction of greed.

inordinately greedy; predatory; extortionate:
a rapacious disposition.

(of animals) subsisting by the capture of living prey; predacious.

Definition taken from Mirriam Webster

What I am watching this week

  • I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!! Its already brilliant, and it only just started again!! There is no way I could have walked out on top of that building, so they already have my utmost respect!! Great stuff, and of course the best bit ? Ant and Dec. So funny those two :)

  • The Walking Dead. We are currently re-watching all the series, in readiness for the new season!! Its brilliant. Proper gory, but really interesting characters and some episodes have made me cry. Andrew Lincoln is just so brilliant in this. Hard to think that he is English - he does a good American!!

  • Coronation Street. Gary proper punched David and well deserved, but I want him and Sarah to be together. Very frustrating. I think Faye's new boyfriend is a wrong un on the other hand. Corrie on fine form at the moment.

What's Happening in the World this Week

  • The American Elections. Trump? Who saw that coming. The world will never be the same again!!

  • The weather suddenly got really cold here in the UK with snow forecast!! Central heating is on.

  • Pentonville prison escape. Its was like something off a film and the fugitives were still at large, but now thankfully caught!!

  • Tesco Bank has been hacked, although they themselves are not using the H word!!

My Retro Single of the Week - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

This week I have chosen a real classic for my retro single of the week - Rick Astley with 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

Released back in 1987, this song really does take me back. Yes, it was naff, yes, Rick's dancing in the video is embarassing, but actually, looking back, its kind of cool in a weirdly naff dad dancing sort of a way!!

This was yet another output from the music making machine that was Stock, Aitken, Waterman that were so huge back in the day. Think Kylie, Jason, Sonia and the lovely Rick!!

'Never Gonna Give You Up'  was catchy and pure pop. It was the first single from Rick, and it came from his debut album Whenever You Need Somebody, which was released the same year.

For all its pop perfection, it was still the ultimate cheesy tune, but we all loved it and its not surprising to learn that it became a huge hit, hitting the number one spot not just here in the UK, but pretty much everywhere!!

Despite its success - number 1 in no less than 25 countries, this song was destined to disappear into the realms of the past gone by, until Rick-rolling began back in 2007. For some strange reason, which I have never fathomed, this song became huge again, when an internet prank led people unknowingly to this video. I'm sure Rick didn't mind, as really put him back in the picture for an entirely new generation!

Rick turned 50 this year, and marked it by releasing an album 50. Given that it reached number one on the uk album chart, he clearly still has a lot of fans out there, not least because of the rick-rolling which catapulted him back into our lives.

So, here we have a cheesy pop tune from the 80's which has somehow become mainstream again thanks to the internet. With lyrics like "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you" I defy you not to be singing this for days to come!! Its that sort of song.

Rick Astley has become much more cool as he grows older, but I bet he can still throw some of "those" moves from the original video that were so appealing / come embarassing. Long live the 80's!!

If you have somehow missed this phenomenon either first time around or in its later reprisal, then you need this in your life. Go take a listen and enjoy :)

If you want more you can find loads of my previous singles of the week, retro singles and more over at My Music page just click here. Happy listening :)

I rescued a bird back in May last year - I'd forgotten!

My good deed for the day - I have rescued a baby Thrush that decided to do a kamikaze flight into the living room window. We were sitting in the lounge, when we heard a bang. I rushed to the window and there it was - a fluffy baby Thrush on the floor lying on its side.

I sprinted out in my PJ's and it was still lying there. It seemed to be breathing, so I fetched a tea towel and gently placed it over the little thing. I wrapped it up and picked it up. I could feel its little heart beating, so I held it to me so it was warm and stroked its head. Its little beak kept opening and closing, and I thought it was a goner.

Then it raised its head a little bit and opened it eyes. I loosened the tea towel, but it didn't fly off. I gently placed it onto the lawn, and it kind of just lay there. So I unwrapped it completely, and just kept stroking it. I checked its wings and its head, and I couldn't see anything so it appeared to have survived. Then it stood up on it legs, but it still made no attempts to move.

Its beak was opening and closing again, and I could hear another Thrush somewhere in the garden, warbling away. I backed away, but still it didn't move. I didn't dare leave it there like that all defenseless. I knelt down, at arms length, and gently nudged it.

It took a tentative step forward. I stroked it again, and it seemed quite happy about it. I then gave it a another little nudge, and off he went!! Flew up into the tree. I was so relieved!!

I've checked the garden several times since, and its not fallen anywhere that I can see so I think he's ok. I have rescued a baby Thrush. Feeling very happy with myself now! :)

3 Day Diet - The Results

This week, I did the 3 day diet or as its otherwise known, the military diet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That meant suffering through days like this:

A round of wholemeal toast, a boiled egg and a banana for breakfast.

Lunch - 5 crackers and some cottage cheese.

The evening's gourmet spectacular:

2 hot dog sausages, carrots and broccoli.

Appetising? No. Filling? Good grief no. I could have gnawed a dog's bone seriously. I would have fought one for it!! However, the results are now in. Cue X Factor music please for dramatic impact....

5 pounds loss!!!! OMG!!! In 3 days!! A-mazing!! I was hungry. I was irritable. I wanted cheese and crisps. I stuck to it and wow!!

Now though, I need to keep it off. So today, is a normal eating day but I have kept the calories low, just a bit more filling. Tonight I had quorn gammon steaks x 2, with some cauli rice and home made salsa to spice it up. Accompanied by a pint of water and cup of green tea. Not exactly like having a chinese takeaway, but compared to the blandness of the 3 day diet it felt like heaven!!

I still need to lose a bit of weight to reach goal - 11lbs to be precise. But this is brilliant. I am going to enjoy my holiday with this body.

11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month - Armistice Day - wear your poppy!!

November 11 is Armistice day when we all wear our poppy to remember those that fought for us. It commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on November 11, 1918.

Today there is a two minute silence held to mark the occasion - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - to remember those killed in the World Wars and all of those British servicemen killed or injured since.

Wear your poppy with pride and honour the 2 minute silence today as we remember.

Retro single of the Week - Elbow 'One Day Like This' - Look Back

This week's retro single of the week is the epic 'One Day Like This' from Elbow.

This song is one of my all time favourites. From the second it kicks in, its just beautiful and makes me feel such emotion. This is my all time pick me up song, as no matter what is happening in my life, it takes me some place where all is good.

'One Day Like This' was released as a single back in 2008. It was from Elbow's fourth album 'Seldom Seen Kid', and was the second single released from it.

This song reached number 4 in the UK singles chart, but it was hugely acclaimed. It won an Ivor Novello, got included in NME's best tracks list, and the band also won a BRIT award. Not bad, and its also been used in loads of media not least the Olympics and Children In Need.

Elbow are a Manchester band, who come from Bury. They've released 6 studio albums, had seven top 40 singles and are still going strong. Their last album, released in 2014, reached the top spot in the UK albums chart, their first one to reach pole position!

This song though, is in my humble opinion, their best ever. Its just anthemic and beautiful. It never dates, and will always remain on my best loved list. If you have never heard it go and take a listen. If you get chance, check out the video. Its simple, but mesmerising. Just a sales advertising guy on the street with a sign for condo's but its just perfect for this song. Unassuming, simple, yet somehow magical.

Absolutely perfect this song. Never fails to move me. If you want more music - singles of the week, retro music, bands and live music just check out My Music page here. Happy listening:)

Welcome Followers :)

I am a relatively new blogger. Still learning, still trying new things, new timings, new post topics. Its just over 2 years since I first dipped my toe and posted my first blog post, and it took me a while to get into regular postings.

I had absolutely no clue what a blog was, let alone how to post or create one. Several templates later, I'm a bit more comfortable with my style, have worked out a few tips and pointers along the way, and learned what I like.

All in all, I love life. I want my blog to show that, so I post about things I love and have a passion for. Mainly its music for me, I love music. I also love films and great TV shows when I find them, such as my current Prison Break and The Walking Dead obsession!! And don't forget travel - I love an adventure.

I also try, and fail, and try some more, and again, to diet, get fit and battle the bulge. Its a never ending story! Finally, and linked to the ongoing battle of the bulge, I love food and I love clothes. So this is what I blog about. My life and loves. I try new things, plan for the future, and look back over what's already happened. A bit of everything really!!

I love competitions too, and when I find ones that feature prizes that fit with my blog, I post them too, as I figure if you read my posts, you must like something about it so you might like to win the prize!

So welcome new followers - its lovely to know that there are a few more of you out there now. Thank you to each one of you. I have now got over 100 of you lovely people following me over on Google+ so thank you to each one of you. I hope you find something interesting here on The Eternal Hopeful and enjoy life along with me.

Thank you for following me, and welcome to my world. x

Totally feeling inspired - Be Who You Want to Be

I have been following the blog Honest Mum for a few months now. Today I stumbled across her site again, and found this post - Be Who You Want to Be.

Because I'm in the throws of resolution making, it was particularly poignant. You need to read it. It will make you really stop and think, take stock and make a change to your own life.

What an amazing woman. Huge fan now. Thankyou Vicki.

This Weeks New Retro Single of the Week - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
