My Week with Morrissey and The Smiths begins

I have chosen Morrissey this week, which of course means The Smiths will feature too. Beyond excited, as I was a massive fan in my younger years, but not listened to them for many years.

So before we begin, I wanted to take a closer look at Morrissey- where he comes from, and how he came to be in The Smiths - where it all began.

Tomorrow I shall begin my week with The Smiths. Its going to be fun - if you can describe Mozzer as fun that is. :)

Daily Positivity Post x 2

Time for today's positivity post, and also positive points from yesterday as I was busy at Harry Potter's tour at Warner Studios!!

First up, lets start with that. Yesterday, we headed down to Watford for the Harry Potter Tour. OMG it was amazing - more on that later. I was literally a child again. It was fabulous. We had butter bear, we saw the sets, the costumes, the props, the designs - mind blowing. Totally enjoyed it, which is very positive.

More positive still was the fact that I drove us there, and it was a really nice drive. Long, but no problems. We had us a little drive around the area, found where we were staying, and identified a good place to stop for food later on. We spent a good 3 hours at the studios, and then headed for food. We had tapas but managed to order enough for about 8 people, with just the 3 of us. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Back to our room, which was in someone's house - like an apartment, rather than a hotel. It was next to the river, and across from a lake. Very lovely. Very warm, and comfortable. So it was back there, for a couple of drinks, and we settled down to watch Braveheart, which was lovely.

This morning, it was an early start as we had a long drive back. We woke up to clear skies, and beautiful views. We watched planes taking off, as we were obviously quite near the airport - not sure which one - possibly Luton or Stanstead. Then we drove back and again, no problems. So that's very positive. To go down the M1 and hit nothing but a bit of speed restrictions, is fabulous.

Back home, I've had a wardrobe sort out so got a few more things for ebay, and more importantly, some space in my wardrobe!! So that felt very positive. Clearing stuff out, sorting things - it feels good. Like a spring clean.

Right now, I'm just chilling out. Had a slight blip on the diet front, but I am not beating myself up about it. I am being positive and allowing it, and I will recover it tomorrow.

I've just done my top 10 songs about magic, in honour of our weekend trip, so that was fun. I am enjoying everything today - I am just in that kind of mood. Tonight, we are going to watch a good film I hope, so thats another thing to look forward to. Plus I have a day off tomorrow, so no worries about the alarm in the morning!! Hoorah!! A very positive weekend.  :)

Reasons to diet - Photo Gallery #3

This is the worst of them now. If I ever decide to pile on the pounds again, this should be firmly stapled to my backside. I mean seriously - I was literally larger than the Cairo Pyramids!!

This was taken in Cairo back in 2007. Firstly, what on earth was I wearing? Secondly - how in hell did I get to this size? I am approx 4 and a half stone lighter now, than I was here and yet am still dieting. Shocking!!

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up is the fact that I have achieved something today that I have never before done. I went to the gym for the fourth day on the trot!! That is amazing!!

Another positive is that today, I took the time to sort out my finances. I know where I am now, and I have a plan. That is positive, especially as I have a new boiler to pay for!!

I got a lot done today at work - I was extremely productive, which felt good. Exhausting, but good. So that's another positive.

Finally, I have been extremely good and disciplined on my diet this week, so I am expecting good things on those damned scales tomorrow. Regardless though, I feel better, so that matters just as much.

I am off to Harry Potter World tomorrow - very excited. So there will definitely be positive stuff tomorrow, I may just not be around to post it. We shall see. Positive stuff though!! All good :)

Tonight's Personal Training

Tonight my Personal Trainer was trying to kill me I think!! Because I am losing weight, and getting stronger and fitter, he pushes me so much harder!!

Here is tonight's session:

  • 5 mins warm up run on treadmill
  • Deadlifts with weight bar - 1 set of 20
  • Deadlifts with heavier weight bar - 3 sets of 15 reps

  • Sitting squats - 4 sets of 15 reps
  • Weight machine - 3 sets of 10 reps rows
  • Weight machine - 3 sets of 10 reps shoulder press

  • Squat thrusts - 1 set of 30 reps, 2 sets of 20 reps

  • 2 minute sprint on treadmill
It was intense. Even more so, because it was my fourth session on consecutive days!! I am becoming the gym bunny!! My body just needs to catch up now and actually look like one!! :)

Here is another example to remind me just why I go to the gym:

This was taken at a Jubilee Party in 2012. The theme was red, white and blue. In my case that meant red earrings, blue jeans, and a white top with a spare tyre just in case!!

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up? Well, I have just posted about this - I have this evening, been for my third gym session of the week. Third day on the trot no less!! Feeling very pleased with myself, and very positive.

Another positive? Ok then. I had a quote planned this evening for a new boiler. Ours is literally on its last legs. Its like hold your breath time every time it makes a funny noise, or if the rads don't get warm one day. After 18 months, we have finally taken the plunge and committed to a new one. Its being fitted on the 14th March, so in just 2 weeks, we will have a bright shiny new boiler, and the pressure will be off. Phewf!!

One more? Oh ok then. I am really looking forward to a long weekend. One more day of work, then off to Harry Potter World saturday. Staying over in a room for the night. Back Sunday, and then a day off monday. Tomorrow is PT. That means I have everything to look forward to. Happy days :)

3rd session at the gym tonight - 3 days running - whoop!!

Well. I said at the start of the week that I wanted to ramp up the exercise this week. I did not think I would manage 3 back to back sessions one day after one another, with another planned for tomorrow!!

I am feeling good. Bit sore, bit achy, but boy have I got the gym bug now. Finally!! Beach body - here I come!

Reasons to diet - Photo Gallery #1

If I ever doubt my reasons for going to the gym and sticking to my diet, then I need look no further than my photo gallery.

Here is a particularly ghastly pic from 2008:

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, today has been a good day for compliments. I wore a pink jumper today, instead of my usual wardrobe of black, black and a bit more black. From the moment I got to work, on a training course, I got a compliment about my jumper.

But it didn't stop there. I got told I was looking good, when I mentioned being on a diet and going to the gym. Then, when I mentioned the upcoming significant birthday next month, I got several comments about not looking my age, which was very nice indeed!!

I finished work, and went to collect my phone, fresh from the repair shop. Its all fixed!! I am so pleased and happy to have it back!! Its been a very long 2 and a half weeks, but finally, the phone is back. I've set it up again, its all working, and I feel back to normal now. Washing machine and phone - bad combination. But positive it is back with me :)

I have been to the gym again this evening. 2 nights on the trot, so feeling very positive about that. Its just possible that this sofa dweller might just become a gym bunny yet. I am feeling positive about my diet, about life and everything today. Good day :)

This week's single of the week - 'Broken Flowers' from Danny L Harle - last chance

This week my single of the week is the brilliant 'Broken Flowers'  from  Danny L Harle.

Real name Daniel Eisner Harle, Danny L Harle is a British music producer and writer. He produced this song back in 2013, but its only recently gotten attention, from the likes of Radio One where yours truly stumbled across it on my way to work one day. It was released in November 2015 as an EP.

I caught the last few seconds of it, and I was captivated by the vocals, which stuck with me. I had no idea what the song was, and a week later, suddenly heard it again and immediately decided it was my single of the week!!

This is a dance track, but its very beautifully sung on the vocals. Its full of electro sounds, and synth, and a great pulsing beat to it. What I didn't know, is that Harle isn't ordinarily this accessible for mainstream. He's usually a little more off radar, but this has truly put him on mine!!

The vocals on this track, are provided by Emily Verlander, and she soars effortlessly and cleanly over this dance track that has more than a few toes dipped in house. There are parts where her vocals are chopped and edited, but I prefer the flowing clean vocals over the music in the background. Its somehow satisfying in combination.

The words are easy to remember and repeat constantly to yourself, or out loud in my case, getting a few funny looks! "Teardrops feel like showers, There's nothing I can see; lying awake for hours, time stands still around me. Teardrops feel like showers, I thought I was free; lying awake for hours, with just your broken flowers".

All in all, this is a great song. Good beat, great vocals, catchy and uplifting. Go take a listen and let me know what you think.

If you want more, then check out My Music page for all my previous choices, and loads more. Happy listening :)

Word of the Week - Négociant - last chance

Négociant

noun

a wine merchant or wholesaler; specifically, one who buys grapes, grape juice, or partially fermented or finished wine from others and sells the wine produced under his or her own name

A négociant is the French term for a wine merchant who assembles the produce of smaller growers and winemakers and sells the result under its own name.

Négociants buy everything from grapes to grape must to wines in various states of completion.

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, I have survived PT!! Hoorah! I feel achy, and tired, and a bit smug to be honest. I like this feeling. It feels good. So there is my first positive.

Another positive - the scales decided to behave again today. Yesterday saw an inexplicable weight gain, but today, its dropped back again. So now its game on - 2 stones to lose. But I feel positive now the scales are budging in the right direction!!

Another positive - it is pay day tomorrow!! That's always a positive.

One more? Oh ok then. I have won another little competition!! For some health stuff this time. So that's ace, and finally? The big news of the day - my phone is coming home from repair tomorrow. Now that is positive :)

Tonight was Personal Training - I survived!!

Tonight was Personal Training and I am happy to say that I survived it!! I didn't manage the gym last week, but this week, my head is on straight. My head and my heart and my body are for once aligned. Every part of me wants to lose the weight, to get that body I have always dreamed of. I want it, and I will have it.

Tonight takes me one day closer to achieving my goal. Here is what my session entailed:

  • 5 min jog on treadmill
  • Kettle bell squats on step box - 3 sets of 20 reps (16 bell)
  • 3 x 3 laps of studio in between sets
  • Kettle bell squat and lift - 3 x 15 reps (12 bell)
  • 3 sets of 2 lengths jogging with 3 x 3 sets of burpees
  • Leg press machine - 15 light reps
  • 1 set of 20 lunges on step
  • Leg press machine - 3 x 20 reps heavy
  • 3 sets of 20 lunges
  • 1 set of 30 reps light
  • 600 metres run on treadmill
  • Stretches
It was hard. It was intense. But my fitness is returning, I feel lighter on my feet, and I am starting to feel strong again. No excuses now. I have to go to the gym as much as possible from this point. Gym bunny I shall be :)

Explain to me how I could have gained weight??

Not a happy bunny today. Not happy at all. Somehow, inexplicably, the scales have gone up. I have been so good with my eating and drinking, and have never exercised so much.

This weekend though, I am 2lb heavier. How? How can that happen? Is should be all but impossible!!

I'm so disheartened. All this effort and for what? I've gained weight!

I have no choice but to persevere as the alternative is definitely to gain weight as if I start eating rubbish again, of course I will get heavier still.

I just do not understand my body sometimes though. I slog my guts out and nothing comes off. I monitor my calories, but I gain weight!!

Help!!! :(

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, I have survived a very long day. Monday's are just the worst. However, I met today with determination and did not give in. That is positive.

I have made plans for my diet now, as I need to get this weight shifted. I have done a little mini workout before work, and some squats this evening. I have been very busy, sorting things out, making tomorrow's sandwiches, washing, and generally getting stuff done. I am in that frame of mind - getting organised. I have a plan, and that makes me feel positive!!

Another positive? Ok then. I have won a competition today. Only a small one, but a win is a win!! A tote bag on its way to me. Plus I called at the Post Office this morning before work, to collect my gilet which I have also won!! Comping can be hit and miss, but when you win, its a wonderful feeling. The gilet is ice blue and it is gorgeous :)

Finally, today I have come to terms with my impending significant birthday!! I have been a right old misery guts about it, but tonight, I have come to the conclusion that its just another day, just a number. Nothing to get myself in a tizz about. So that is positive. You may not think so, but you haven't seen the grumpy buggar I have been so this is major progress!!

So there you go, more positives :)

Weight Loss Plan - 10 week plan starting today

Monday is the beginning of this particular attempt, so I shall begin from there:

  • Monday 22nd Feb - Reboot!!
  • Week 1 GOAL - 6lb loss (29th Feb) =6lb
  • Week 2 GOAL - 3lb loss (7th Mar) = 9lb
  • Week 3 GOAL - 3lb loss (14th Mar) = 12lb
  • Week 4 GOAL - 2lb loss (21st Mar) = 1st
  • BIRTHDAY WEEK - maintain
  • Week 5 GOAL - 3lb (4th April) = 1st 3lb
  • Week 6 GOAL - 2lb loss (11th April) = 1st 5lb
  • Week 7 GOAL - 3lb loss (18th April) = 1st 8lb
  • Week 8 GOAL - 2lb loss (25th April) = 1st 10lb
  • Week 9 GOAL - 5lb loss (1st May) = 2st 2lb (3 day diet)
If I can lose 2 stone and 2lbs in 10 weeks, I will be the lowest weight I have been since I was 20!! Goal on!! :)

Time for today's positivity post. First up, today has been a cleaning day. The windows are now beautiful and sparkly. To the point where my other half commented that it looked like there was actually no glass in them, so clean as they now are!! Fabulous.

I have done dishes, bleached sides, scrubbed and polished. The washing is done, the bedding changed - you name it, and with a slight hangover to boot!! Very positive. I love how the house feels when its all clean and freshly spruced up!

Another positive, is that we have booked an overnight stay for next weekend when we head off to see Harry Potter World. I cannot wait, and even more excited now we are staying over!! Whoop!!

Not sure if I feel positive about this next one or not - mixed feelings, but it is exactly one month today until my birthday. Its a big one, hence the mixed feelings. However, we are already making some lovely plans, and the goal now is to lose as much weight as possible before then. 1 month to go.

Today, I was also homework helper. Maths and English. Honestly, its so hard trying to remember, but if I'm honest, I am quite enjoying it!! I have long division down now!! I am a bit of a geek, so its quite good to get back to basics and rekindle my school skills. I have had to google several tasks - dividing fractions? Really? No clue. Had to really try and work it out, and considering G is 10, its tough stuff!! I am enjoying it though. And it feels positive to help G with this.

I've been putting my mind to how I am going to maximise how this body is going to look on holiday. I feel more positive now. I have a plan for my exercise, my diet - the whole shebang. So, from tomorrow, I am on mission beach body. Positive stuff :)

Our very own Robin Red Breast, and he's a fan of the Foo Fighters!

Since we moved into our new house, we have noticed there are quite a lot of birds. Its been lovely hearing them sing away.

Last weekend, we were clearing up the last of the dead leaves, and having a general garden tidy up, when I noticed a little robin nearby.

I didn't take much notice at first, but then I noticed him again a little closer. Then again, the finally, he was right next to me!

Here he is:

He's such a cutey pie. Proper round like a little tennis ball!!

This is the best bit. I'm whistling away to the Foo Fighters, when I hear this chirping nearby. On closer inspection it turned out to be the little Robin red red breast. He's obviously a Foo Fighters fan - he was giving it some!!

How fabulous? Not only a cute little robin frequenting our garden and keeping us company, but one who has great taste in music too!! Am going to get him some treats and keep him well fed to make sure he keeps visiting us.

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, its Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, to quote Mr Elton John!! Is that not enough for you?

No, of course not. So, lets get to it. Ok, so its been a family oriented weekend. It was the father in law's 86th Birthday today. He's been so poorly on and off, so the fact he has reached such a ripe old age, is wonderful!!

Another? we went to my favourite restaurant for tea this evening. And I had a healthy option. I am really proud of myself!! I had one piece of bread for our shared starter. Then I had cajun chicken for my main. With boiled potatoes and a side salad.

More? Ok then. Today, I met the daughter of my other halfs son's girlfriend. Complicated? Yes!! But Maisie is ace. Made me realise that 5 is kind of cool, if frustrating!!

Then, finally, we have spent a few fun hours watching silly videos of my past life. Sky dive, swimming with dolphins, America - I was young, I was reckless - I had no fashion sense, clearly, but my god if I could have my time again!!

Never the less - its a positive to remember just how wild, how amazing, how full of hope, life and promise I once was. Its a positive. I need to get that back. :)

Out for a meal tonight - mission to stay on the diet!!

We are going out for a meal this evening. In preparation so far I have had 2 rounds of toast and marmite for breakfast, and 4 ryvita with cottage cheese for my lunch.

So far, I've been very disciplined. Now this evening, we are off to the Harvester. I chose the venue as I know I can have a healthy option of chicken breast and jacket spud, but I still have to contend with resisting the naughty stuff masquerading as healthy on the salad bar - the potato salad, the pasta, the dressings and the bread (I love bread).

Then there is the decision over what to have to drink. I can't have wine - it is a very bad idea for a diet. If I don't have wine then what do I have? Maybe a whisky and diet coke? Maybe a long drink? Whatever happens, I need to be very careful.

I am now so close to getting below the stone mark. I weighed in at 13 stone 4 this morning. That's a hell of a drop this week, but it will be quickly back on again if I'm not careful. So careful it is.

Just over 10 weeks until my holiday, and 4 weeks until my birthday - plenty to be slim for. Got to be good. :)

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up I can proudly report that I have lost 2lbs this week. It may sound a small amount, but its put me back under the half stone mark, so it feels wonderful!! I feel slimmer, I feel healthier.

Better than that, another positive on the weight front - I can also welcome the return of my cheekbones!! They have been MIA for some time now, but they are back. Not quite "grate your cheese" on them yet, but they are well on their way.

Another positive, albeit its going to still cost me £50 excess, is that my phone is finally being fixed!! As you may recall, I accidentally washed my iphone 6 in the washing machine 2 weeks ago on Sunday. It was a write off. I had a total melt down then remembered it was covered through my bank thankfully! Fast forward 2 weeks, and they have accepted my claim and it is being repaired. Thank goodness for that!! I have been so lost without it, and now finally, there is hope on the horizon and it should be back within 3-5 days. It can't come soon enough, but its positive news indeed.

Are you ready for another one? Well ok then. The gilet I won has arrived today. Well, I say its arrived - the card saying I need to go pick it up has arrived, but it amounts to the same thing. So that's good - I haven't won anything in ages, so I am going to enjoy it!!

You see? More positives every day. Its good stuff - still not a single day where there was nothing to be positive about. I am impressed! :) Long may it last !!

Things to do, busy busy busy

I have so much to do this year. So many things I want to accomplish, try and experience. Not to mention things I need / want!!

The list goes:

  • new gates
  • clean all the windows
  • new guttering
  • repair pegola
  • get a BBQ
  • throw a party
  • hot air balloon
  • get a tattoo
  • see loads of gigs
  • go to the theatre
  • get to goal weight
  • run a 5K
  • start writing again
  • hopefully win some competitions!
  • get a new job
  • try and new experience
  • get my belly button pierced
  • change my car
I could go on but I would be here all night!! What are your plans for this year?

Diet? What Diet?

I am totally off plan. Not exercise wise - that is actually going great guns. Getting fitter, stronger, better. Weight though? Well thats another story at the moment.

I go on holiday 8 weeks tomorrow, so you would think I would be going for it all out. Well I was, for a week or so. Then last weekend, courtesy of an inexplicable weight gain, I gave up and went spectacularly off track.

I have tried to pull it back this week, but find myself secretly bingeing when noone is around. Tonight, it was a velvet crunch crisp buttie, 2 shapers bars and a handfull of skittles!!

Now I am having a glass of wine!! Why? No idea. Usually I can really make myself focus. My will power has evaporated though.

I cannot go on holiday fat again. It made me so unhappy last time, but can I get my head in gear this week? Nope!!

I hope its out of my system by tomorrow, as I have 8 weeks. But tonight is another story :)

New Diet Plan - following a bit of a rethink!!!

Monday 6th Jan 2016 was the beginning of this year's attempt to lose weight.

I have lost a bit of weight, so its not been a complete disaster, but I am nowhere even near the point I had aimed to be. I had been aiming high mind you. So here is the revised version:

  • Monday 18th Jan 2016 - START

  • Week 1 GOAL - 3lb loss (25th Jan) = 3lb
  • Week 2 GOAL - 2lb loss (1st Feb) = 5lb
  • Week 3 GOAL - 3lb loss (8th Feb) = 8lb
  • Week 4 GOAL - 3lb loss (15th Feb)= 11lb
  • Week 5 GOAL - 3lb loss (22nd Feb) = 1st
  • Week 6 GOAL - 2lb loss (29th Feb) = 1st 2lb
  • Week 7  GOAL - 3lb loss (7th Mar) = 1st 5lb
  • Week 8 GOAL - 3lb loss (14th Mar) = 1st 8lb
  • Week 9 GOAL - 3lb loss (21st Mar) = 1st 11lb
  • BIRTHDAY WEEK - maintain
  • Week 11 GOAL - 2lb loss (4th April) = 1st 13lb
  • Week 12 GOAL - 2lb loss (11th April) = 2st 1lb
  • Week 13 GOAL - 3lb loss (18th April) = 2st 4lb
  • Week 14 GOAL - 2lb loss (25th April) = 2st 6lb

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, its nearly the weekend, and this week, that cannot come soon enough!! One more get up.

Another? Ok then, the scales were looking much better this morning. I couldn't resist hopping on. Mid week, usually it goes up - not this week!! Hoorah!! Good feeling.

Today was a busy day, but myself and one of the best people I have ever worked with got through an epic task today. Its a good feeling knowing that a - its done, and b - what a brill person and a true friend I work with. That's a rare thing, but she's brill, a real rock.

Finally, today was another day that I stuck to my diet, right down the cup of Boo Tea I am drinking as I write this. I am in the right place now, and that feels good. Slim here I come :)

Word of the Week - Négociant

My Film Reviews - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

This film is a couple of years old now - 2011 I believe. For some reason, I have never watched it. I do this sometimes - when a film has a little too much hype it puts me off watching it as so many times they can be overrated. This was not the case with this remake with Daniel Craig as male lead and the formerly unknown Rooney Mara as female lead.

I haven't read the Stieg Larsson books (they are now on my to read list) so I had no idea what to expect from this. From the very beginning I was hooked. Mara plays the lead Lisbeth so convincingly that you forget that she is an actor and are genuinely absorbed into her portrayal of the troubled, definitely not quite the full shilling, but also utterly and completely the herione of the piece. Craig, by comparison, is actually a bit of wimp in this - far removed from his Bond persona.

The opening dialogue from Mara gives you a hint of the fearsome intellect hiding beneath her harsh and distant demeanor, but is nothing compared to the way her character weaves through the plot, compelling you to will her on. The point in the film when she is betrayed by someone who should be there to help her, but who abuses her makes for difficult watching. However the pay back is one of the best I have ever seen in a movie. Not ridiculously gruesome as can often be the case, just clever and to be honest, you do find yourself thinking well deserved.

At no point does the plot waver - it doesnt miss a beat, keeps you gripped to the very end. Even the final scene leaves you wanting more and not wanting this brilliant film to end. So it is just as well that there are follow ups to keep you going!!

I definetely recommend this one if you are a fan of pyschological thrillers, or even if you arent, as the acting is absolutely top notch. Some well established names add class and credibility - Christoper Plummer (yes, him off the Sound of Music), Joely Richardson (Nip, Tuck), Geraldine James (yes, Bitty!!) amongst others.

I give this 9 1/2 out of ten. Why the 1/2 point off full marks? Because I didn't want it to end like it did, albeit though the ending does leave you wanting to know where it goes next an wanting more!!!

Daily Positivity Post

Time for today's positivity post. First up, I was off on leave this afternoon. So short day and that felt good. It shouldn't feel as good as it did, but there you go. I will take it where I can find it!!

So, I headed home after a meeting this morning, as the other half and G were off. We were going to go ten pin bowling, but it was booked up until tea time, so we went to the cinema instead. It was a brand new complex in our City, which had really comfy seats, with loads of leg room, so that was fab.

We went to see The Chipmunks - The Road Chip Movie. Fast and furry-ous. Obviously not my choice, but still - if it keeps the 10 year old happy, the fair do's. I have a confession though - it was brill!! Totally silly, totally light hearted - just what I needed!! I am a fan of Alvin. There, I said it :)

From there, it was over to Currys. The father in law needs a new fridge freezer, so we got that ordered. It arrives on Saturday. That will be great for him - his old one is past its best. So that was positive.

You want more? Ok then. We had fun in Currys browsing stuff we want- a big American fridge freezer, a curve TV, an induction hob and a double oven. I like doing that - it inspires me.

Then, back home - healthy tea. Been good again today, albeit carrying an injury. But, and here is the final positive for today - I can feel my hip bones again!! Hoorah!! They were MIA for a while there, but they are back in action. Good stuff and very positive :)

New Single of The Week - Danny L Harle - 'Broken Flowers'

This week my new single of the week is the brilliant 'Broken Flowers'  from  Danny L Harle.

My Week with Morrissey Day 1 - Piccadilly Palare

Day 1 of My Week with Morrissey and first up its the brilliant 'Piccadilly Palare'.

'Piccadilly Palare' was released in 1990. It was from his compilation album 'Bona Drag' released the same month and year as the single, in October of that year. It was the first track on the album.

Being Morrissey, this was never going to be an average song. Nor was its subject matter, which I didn't understand back then, being still at high school myself! The song is apparently about male prostitution; specifically around Piccaddilly in London. Who knew? Not me!

This is quite a pop sounding song, but its more indie than mainstream. In the background, you can hear vocals, and they are by none other than fellow vintage pop star, in the form of Suggs from Madness!! I had no idea.

If it wasn't for the somewhat dark and a tad sarcastic lyrics, you could easily be taken in by this. But listen carefully, its much deeper than it appears on first listen. Its all guitar and drums, and somewhat cynical snarly vocals this one.

It was quite a hit in the UK singles chart, reaching number 18. Not bad. I think this is the first Morrissey single that I actually ever bought, on vinyl. Its probably still up in the loft somewhere. I must dig that out really, take a walk down memory lane.

Its indie, a little rock, a little pop, and utterly unique. Some of the lyrics are just amazing "Off the rails I was and off the rails I was happy to stay - GET OUT OF MY WAY". Noone says it quite like Mozza. Some are just plain puzzling "your lovely eek and your lovely riah". I say what?? That's what makes this song so brilliant. you can sing along, with no clue what it means or what words you are singing. As I have said, the meaning is much deeper, but its still a good sing along never the less.

So there we have it, Day 1 of My week with Morrissey and the fabulous 'Piccadilly Palare'. If you haven't heard it before, which will be a lot of you out there I'm guessing, then go familiarise yourself with a small chunk of musical history.

Now all that remains to be done, is to choose tomorrow's song. If you can't wait, why don't you check out My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)
