I almost retired from comping this evening :(

It was nearly all over tonight. I almost retired from comping. Its month end, which means lots of comps, but I just could not do it.

I got home, and I did not comp. I did not turn on my laptop. I considered never comping again. I couldn't see the point. I have had a slow year on the comping this year.

I've had my biggest ever win, back in May, but other than that, its been pretty dry in terms of wins.

I've persevered through dry spells before, and then they have broken. So I did this again earlier this year. Then the big win. Then, well, then nothing. And more nothing. And more nothing.

Tomorrow is August and I couldn't summon the energy to be bothered. I advised the other half of my imminent retirement. He simply responded with "ok".

Surprised at his lack of interest, I asked why he wasn't. He responded with "if you don't enter, you can't win, so don't". This piqued my interest. Was it a mind game to make me comp again?

I asked again - do you think I should stop? No he said. You enjoy it. You will win again, but its up to you.

Reality hit then. So I haven't won for awhile. But I have many times before. And he's right, I do enjoy it. So I have picked up my laptop and resumed my hobby. I might not be winning, but I am trying.

I am out of retirement and back in the game:)

One year on since our offer was accepted !!!!

On the 30th July last year, I posted this:

We are making progress. We viewed it, we put in our offer, it was first refused, so we put another offer in. It was accepted. That was last Tuesday, and I had the mortgage promise in place.

Once the offer was accepted, I called the bank and set the ball rolling. We then viewed it again with my step daughter and my parents. We fell even more in love.

Over the last week from then until now, its been a waiting game. Waiting for the bank to run their checks,  listen to the recorded call, make their recommendation - on and on. Finally, today - the recommendation was made.

I have now parted with money - for the bank's valuation and for the product fee. Whatever happens next, I've done all I can and its all systems go!!

Bit scared, bit excited, very nervous. Everything crossed!! Keep you posted :)

My Film Reviews - Conception

Conception. The title says it all - this film is all about conception. I had never seen this before, despite it being a 2011 release, but decided to give it a go.

It begins with a hilarious bit at the start with the kids at school asking their teacher where babies come from. Said teacher being David Arquette who plays the awkward 'no idea how to answer the question' teacher brilliantly.

The film then switches to the main stories. Nine different couples, all going through different routes in their lives, all leading to conception.

Couple 1 - The first love teenagers. She promises him sex in return for becoming vegetarian.

Couple 2 - The new parents. 6 weeks after the birth, they try to rekindle their love life, but she struggles to cope with the changes to her body post baby.

Couple 3 - The married couple who have lost their spark. They exchange witty banter, covering up their lack of intimacy.

Couple 4 - The lesbian couple who have been together a long long time going through the artificial insemination process to bring a baby into their lives.

Couple 5 - The couple at the point of break-up (almost). Cue smashing the TV and make up love making and refused proposal.

Couple 6 - A divorcee and her toy boy lover. Their relationship is mainly physical.

Couple 7 - The husband and wife who are trying for baby. They are undergoing fertility treatment and their love life revolves around her ovulation, obsessively.

Couple 8 - The blind date couple. After a successful first date night, they go back to his place for 'coffee'.

Couple 9 - The couple who have to argue. They love each other, but have to argue a little, including about showering - more banter than serious arguing.

The film doesn't have big names, other than Arquette, being more of a low-budget indie release. However it immediately hooks you in and keeps it light and entertaining. It hits many a poignant note, but because it flits between the nine couples, it doesn't have time to get maudlin.

It's an intriguing and clever film, well played and well scripted. I really enjoyed this film. Regardless where you are in your own life, you will relate to at least one of the characters.

All nine couples conceive that night. It makes you think, but it doesn't over do the consequences, as it leaves it at that point for each, leaving you to only imagine what might happen to them and their relationships.

I give this a clear 8 out of 10. Its funny, its entertaining, its sentimental, its thought provoking, something that many a high budget number might do well to remember. Its a genuine film, not trying to hard to please. Strongly recommend this one.

Let me know if you have seen it, or if you go watch it as I would love to know what you think.

You can check out more of my movie choices by checking out My Film Review page here.

Comping dry spell strikes again!!

I have been comping for about 3 years now. I've had some great wins, some little wins, some unusual wins. The thing that happens in between all that though is the dreaded dry spell.

What often happens is that after a significant dry spell comes a down pour. Last time, it was £1500 to spend at Westfield which was amazing!!

One or two small wins followed, then for the whole of June - nothing. July looks to be heading the same way.

Its tempting to give up. But if I give up, then I definitely won't win. So I have no choice but to once again ride it out.

Luck is a funny thing. Lets face it, if comping was guaranteed everyone would be doing it. Its a strange old hobby, but I love it.

So, I need to get some more comping done and keep going. Everything crossed :)

My single of the week 26 - DJ Fresh feat Ellie Goulding - Flashlight - how did it do?

My single of the week number 26 was DJ Fresh feat. Ellie Goulding - Flashlight.

So how did it fare in the singles chart? Well, it didn't actually reach the top 40, coming in at number 47 in the UK singles chart.

Next holiday booked - Gran Canaria - Whoop!

So excited. Already this year we have been to Marrakesh in March, and then Crete in July. But I do like to have one booked to look forward to.

Monday night, after hours of research, the other half finally narrowed down his search. First of all, from the Canaries, it was narrowed down to Gran Canaria.

Then to Maspalomas. He must have researched 30 hotels, before finally getting it down to the final 2 choices. So it was decision time.

At quarter to midnight, he finally decided and showed me the hotel. It looked fab. So we booked it! Just like that!

So we are off again in October. How fabulous? :)

New Single of the Week - 5 Seconds of Summer - She's Kinda Hot

My new single of the week is 'She's Kinda Hot' by 5 Seconds of Summer.

Released just last week, this is one of those songs that gets really stuck in your head. Perfect pop tune but with guitars to give it some edge.

5 Seconds of Summer, or 5SOS, are an Australian band. They are a 4 piece consisting of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin. Although they are four young men, I wouldn't describe them as a boy band. They play their own instruments for starters - they are a band, not a boy band.

They are also very talented. This single is much heavier than their previous ones - more rock than pop, but still cool enough to be appealing to all age ranges, including mine! They are a bit punk in their styling, rock with their guitars, and pop with their vocals and lyrics. As I said, talented.

I love the lyrics "My shrink is telling me I've got crazy dreams, She's also saying I've got low self-esteem", then "We are the kings and the queens of the new broken scene, Yeah we're alright though". Its like a song for the underdog. Clever words.

I think this is a great single. Go take a listen and let me know what you think of it.

My Week with Goldfrapp is Over

My Week Goldfrapp is over. Seven songs, seven days and its been epic!

Number 3: Happiness
Number 4: Number 1
Number 5: A & E

What I'm watching this week

  • Emmerdale. I am loving the new trailers - Who Will Meet their Summer Fate? Clever. I'm hoping its Robert. He is just such a wrong un! Or maybe it will be Debbie - I mean she is being very naughty and the biggest shock for her is yet to come!! I love Emmerdale. The shenanigans are just compulsive viewing and since when does everyone in a rural village look like they've never spent an hour outdoors? Perfect complexions with no sign of country living!
  • Lucy. I watched this newly released on Sky Movies this week. You can check out my movie review soon for more detail. What I can say in summary is how brilliant Scarlett Johansson is. She is sultry, an amazing body and a fantastic actress. She is simply mesmerising in this sci-fi ultra slick and intelligent movie. Clever plot, cleverly and beautifully executed. Definitely recommend this film.
  • Couples Come Dine With Me. I love the couples episodes. There are the newbies who are still totally into one another, being put to the test in the kitchen. The old married couple bickering. The ones who get sloshed, the ones who can't cook. The banter, the bitching - fabulous darling!!
  • Tom Cruise Films. So far this week we have watched Top Gun, Collateral, Mission Impossible III, and Eyes Wide Shut. Yes, we are having a bit of a Tom fest. There's a new channel at the moment featuring Mr C's films in readiness for the new MI film, which I am hoping to go and see at the flicks! I consider myself prepared now. Just need a few more - maybe Cocktail and MI Ghost Protocol to go then I am ready.

Day 7 of My Week with Goldfrapp - Ooh La La

Day 7 of my week with Goldfrapp and today its 'Ooh La La'.

'Ohh la la' was released in 2005 as lead single from their album 'Supernature'. This was one of their biggest hits reaching number 4 in the UK singles chart, and also being a big dance hit.

This single is still electronic, but in a sort of homage to 70's rock it also features electric guitar - unusual for Goldfrappy. The result is a really catchy infectious number that stands out.

The video is very retro and 70's themed. From Alison's bell bottomed all in one, to the huge shoulder pads. Then the band who look more than a bit like they should be in a glam rock band and of course more than a nod to the great T-Rex. None less than the sparkly horse she rides in her white outfit. All platform heels and blue eyeshadow. Great video.

This is a sultry, sexy number with a real pulse. The lyrics are also very sexy "Switch me on, turn me up, I want to touch you, You're just made for love". The title "ooh la la" repeats sensually pulling you in with Alison's distinctive breathy vocals.

My last choice from Goldfrapp and we've gone out on a high. You can find days 1-6 over at My Music page here.

Now all that remains to do is to decide, of my seven song choices from this brilliant group, which is number 1? Pop back soon to find out! Happy listening :)

It's 151 sleeps until Christmas :)

151 more sleeps until the big man in red comes again. Can it be that we are now closer to next Christmas than its been since the last one?

I am going to get organised this year. I'm already thinking about it. I'm due to do Christmas dinner for the first ever time this year, so much planning to be done.

Then, because last year was our first in this new home, it was a bit of a chaotic decoration plan. This year, I know where the lights hook to, where the plug sockets are. It will be much better this year!!

151 sleeps. How exciting! :)

Sunday lazy Sunday

Having a lazy day. Its 12.45 and I'm still in my PJ's!! So are G and my other half! Right now, we are watching the classic Superman film. Best film ever for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

We aren't being entirely lazy - take me for instance. I'm typing this for starters on my blog. Then, I've decided to try and learn something new each week, and this weeks its repost for Instagram. Its been bugging for a month or so since I joined Instagram, as many comps require you to repost and I hadn't a scooby doo how to do it! Now I know. This week's task complete.

I've set myself a few tasks to do - closing down the hundreds of emails that I received whilst I was on my hols - usually I do this daily, but obviously a week away scuppered that!! Then, I want to find out how to filter emails that say "win" if that's possible to separate them. I have more than one email, so its only my main one for all my comping, surveys etc.. but it doesn't half clog up!! There has to be a way, so that's the next thing to learn.

Then there is my other half's photos. I'm really OCD with mine. I download them, organise them, then also back them up on an external hard drive. The other half does not. They are all over the place!! So I need to sort them out for him and then get them backed up to. My external hard drive is huge, so it won't be a problem!

Next to do is to get some comps entered. Then schedule a few more blog posts, as I've a busy week this week. I need to finish my last song of my week with Goldfrapp and then choose a new single of the week too.

I might list a few things on ebay later as I've got loads of stuff I've cleared out that I need to list. Plus a few bits of furniture I want to get rid of too.

So when I say its a lazy day, its lazy in terms of not moving much, but actually I'm being quite productive !! It is absolutely tipping down anyway, and luckily we got the gardening done yesterday. So I have earned my lazy Sunday :)

I think the Chuckle Brothers are cooking in my kitchen!!

Imagine the scene. Sitting on my reclining sofa, chilling out watching TV when I hear "Oh my god I can't believe you've just done that" from the kitchen.

G appears in the doorway in her white T-shirt, well when I say white I mean it was white. Now it was splattered red! Passata all over it! Quickly taking said garment from her as she ran up the stairs, I took the top in to the kitchen to find out what had happened.

I found her dad there, with more tomato all over the floor and up the newly washed bedding! It seems G had cut across the top of the carton, rather than the customary snip of the corner. He had picked it up and in doing so squeezed the carton slightly resulting in a sizable eruption across the kitchen!

It was like carnage. I started laughing, I couldn't help it. Luckily the bedding only got a splash and I had put it to dry inside out - a blessing. It soon sponged off. Into the sink in some stain remover for the top. It was soon back to normal.

I returned to the living room as the two of them were working on their own pasta sauce so it seemed three would be a crowd.

Moments later I heard another commotion and then the hoover started up. Apparently a packet of seeds had exploded in the cupboard. G was hysterical saying it wasn't her.

I started laughing again and came back in the living room. The two of them were causing havoc - it wasn't safe to remain in the vicinity!

Literally minutes later, another crash and G sounded upset. I rushed into the kitchen and found her standing there with a packet of long spaghetti by her feet, which had crashed into the bowl of passata en route to the floor so once again the kitchen was tomato spattered!!

She was starting to think she was jinxed, but by this point I was just helpless!! I was literally sliding down the wall I was laughing so hard. My other half was quite cross at first, but my laughter was infectious.

G's crying changed in sound, and when her dad asked her if she was crying or laughing she stated "both"! Laughter is contagious!

Honestly, it was like the Chuckle Brothers had taken over my kitchen. It sounded so funny from the living room listening to the various exclamations, bangs and crashes! Made my night - free entertainment! :)

Last minute preps for Hols

We are off on our sunshine holiday to Crete tomorrow. Today is the last minute preparations. Busy just isn't the word.

First up its the dreaded leg wax this morning. Am I looking forward to that? That would be a hell no. Its not a nice experience, but it has to be done.

Next its the gym. Last chance workout for me and final opportunity to work those final ounces off to be the slimmest I can be. Minimum of 500 cals needs to be burned off.

I shall then get a few hours of work done to tie up loose ends before we depart. Then at 6pm its my spray tan. I am that person that arrives on my holiday looking tanned and gets paler as the week goes on.

Then its the last minute packing, last minute comping and blogging before I give up on the preparations and just chill out knowing everything is done.

I am very excited, but today is going to be a long day. Worth it though when I am all calm and relaxed and raring to go in the morning.

Holidays are exhausting aren't they? :)

Holiday playlist July 2015

When I go on holiday, I always treat us to some new tunes. It helps make the holiday special. So we choose some new songs to pop on the holiday playlist to get us in the mood.

Here are the new additions for the next holiday. I can already picture myself there:
  • Everyday - A$AP Rocky
  • The Giver - Duke Dumont
  • I Don't Like it, I love it - Flo Rida
  • Runaway (U&I) - Galantis
  • Not Letting Go - Tinie Tempah & Jess Glynne
  • Bad Blood - Taylor Swift
  • Cheerleader - OMI
  • Lean on- Major Lazer
These top tunes should get us in the holiday mood. Now I just need to be there feeling those rays.

Paloma Day has arrived!!

Goodness its a year of music this year for me. Just over 2 weeks since Taylor Swift, now its time for Paloma Faith!

This time the gig is at Cannock Chase via the Forestry Commission. How cool is that? I've never been to a gig in a forest before. I hope we get good weather or this could be messy!

I absolutely love Paloma. I don't know all her songs, but I know enough of them to deafen anyone nearby howling along to! She is such an English icon, and so eccentric in a good way.

Yes, this is an exciting day! Bring on the sunshine or if not, bring on the wine, the wellies and the umbrella! :)

What I'm Watching this week

This weeks viewing includes:

  • Coronation Street. Tonights' episode saw the sad news of Deirdre's death finally break. I have to confess to shedding a tear or two. Just so sad, but so beautifully done.

  • Big Brother. After Mark's shock exit I did think they might stop arguing. It would appear I was wrong on that one! They now seem to be on a mission to wipe out the prize money!

  • Jaws, Jaws 2 and Cloverfield. Yes, its all about big teeth and monsters for me this week! I absolutely love Jaws anyway, and dread to think how many times I have seen those 2 films, but Cloverfield is also another repeat offender of mine!! All good fun.

  • Love Island. This is not my usual cup of tea, but my other half loves it, so I have to watch it. Most of them appear to be orange of some shade, and fake just isn't the word - no natural beauties here! However, it does have an appeal and it is quite fun to watch. I'm off on hols next week, so I don't want serious viewing on my screen at present!!

All these films that I have seen #81

Here are my next 10 films:
