Retro single of the week - starting soon..

I was thinking about my next single of the week and an idea struck - as often happens when you are not trying desperately to think of one, ideas pop into my head.

So here it is - the idea. I've been choosing singles of the week for new and forthcoming tracks for the past year or so and its really enjoyable. But actually my musical journey goes much further back rather than forwards.

We all have songs we love and songs that hold memories for us. So my idea, getting slowly and laboriously to the point is this - I am going to continue with My Week with for bands that have at least 7 songs I can choose!! I am going to continue to choose a new single of the week each week - this week's is the brilliant Not Letting Go

However, I will also be choosing a vintage or retro single of the week to boot!! What could be better than heading back to those songs that really got you? So that's my idea. And they say ideas are inhibited by lack of sleep!! Sleep is not high on my agenda at the moment let me tell you!!

So retro single of the week starts Sunday.  How cool is that?

Day 3 of My Week with Goldfrapp - Strict Machine

Day 3 of my week with Goldfrapp and today its 'Strict Machine'

'Strict Machine' was released in 2003. It was taken from their second album 'Black Cherry' released the same year. 'Strict Machine' was the second single from the album.

This is a very electro pop song with a thumping beat to it. Its still Alison's vocals that raise it above others in this genre though. The song is catchy, and very dance oriented, but its still her that makes it unique.

The video is also very electronic and special effects. It has Alison dressed in a sort of psychedelic number dancing with men who have dog's heads. Bit odd. There are butterflies around her and the colour contrasts against black and white backgrounds as things split and mirror image themselves.

This single reached number 20 in the UK singles chart. Apparently, its about lab rats who were being experimented upon to feel joy when they carried out commands. She interpreted this to write about humans and machines on a more sexual level. Who knew?

The lyrics are all about electronic love. "I get high on a buzz, then a rush, when I'm plugged in u" is how it opens. Then "wonderful electric". It seems to be something sexual without actually saying so. Clever and also very catchy.

This song has a real dance beat, and a strong pulse, as well as a catchy hook. Its well produced, lyrically enticing and vocally as ever, perfect.

So there we have it - Day 3 'Strict Machine'. You can find Days 1&2 plus loads more over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

  • 4 x 90 second treadmill sprints on level 2 incline 6mph +
  • 4 x sit up and weight ball throws - 10 reps
  • 4 x 10 squat jumps onto box
  • box burpees - 4 x 1 minute reps
  • 4 x medicine ball rolling planks 4 x 1 minute reps
  • 4 x chest press - 1 minute reps

  • 3 sets of 3 lengths running the studio
  • 6 lengths of the studio jogging
It was hard hard hard and my arms and legs burn, my backside burns - everything pretty much.

Good session!! :)

What I'm Watching this week

  • Grand Designs. Still absolutely fascinated by this program. I love how some buildings are converted into amazing creations and others are started from scratch. Lifeboat stations, chapels, derelict, water towers - you name it. Against the elements and against escalating costs, these building are inspirations.
  • Big Brother. Sorry - I admit to being a fan. I know its not big, and its not clever but its like car-crash TV. You don't want to watch it but you just can't quite turn it off!! Arguments, bitchiness, show-mances, more arguing, more egos. Wonderful stuff.
  • Banshee. Now into Season 2 and last night I watched the episode where their old house burns down. Such a clever and dramatic program. The "Sheriff" and his ex-wife - Rabbit's daughter, have no choice but to return to Banshee and to face the repercussions.
  • The Soaps - Corrie, Eastenders and Emmerdale. I've watched bits of all three this week and they are all drama packed at the moment. We have the various love triangles in Emmerdale coming to boiling point, and I am hoping Robert gets whats coming to him! Eastenders is all about Shabs and Stacey and Kush, and then the whole baby situation with Dean. Corrie - babies again. Will Nick and Carla finally get together? I do hope so. Drama drama drama. Love it!

Day 2 of My Week with Goldfrapp - A & E

Day 2 of my week with Goldfrapp and today its 'A & E'.

'A & E' was released in 2008. It was taken from their 2008 album 'Seventh Tree'. It was the lead single. It peaked at number 10 in the UK singles chart.

Now this track can be best described as simply beautiful, albeit with a bit of a dark them lyrically. After all it is called 'A&E' as in Accident & Emergency at the hospital!

Apparently Alison wrote this about having an accident and ending up in A&E. The backless dress is reference to the hospital gowns. Whatever its about, it sounds beautiful and her vocals are so delicate yet soothing and kind of enticing. She hits such notes so wonderfully - her voice just soars above.

The video sees her dancing in the forest full of leaves. Suddenly the leaves come to life as men covered in them, as they dance around her. Alison herself is wearing a floaty white dress and looks ethereal in the setting. As evening arrives, she is joined by woodland animals in the forest. They dance until she falls down. The camera pans away from her and we see Will sitting by his tent having a brew. Its a very eccentric, quirky and beautiful video.

Right from the first line, this is an enchanting song, despite its slightly dark rationale. It begins with "its a blue, bright blue Saturday hey hey, and the pains started to slip away hey hey". Its this part that gets stuck in your head though "I was feeling lonely feeling blue, feeling like I needed you". I challenge you to listen to this song and not walk around singing that bit for hours on end.

This is a pop song, but its still electro synth and works because of that combined with Goldfrapp's sensationally exotic and powerful yet soft and gentle vocals. Beautiful song.

So there we are - Day 2 - 'A&E'. If you want to check out my Day 1 choice, or for more music to keep you going, you can find all my previous choices over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

So many things to do so little time

I need more hours in the day. I am getting more into my blogging - really enjoying just writing and sharing adventures, music and just life really.

So each day, I go to work full time then I go to the gym. Then its household chores - cleaning, washing, hoovering, dishes, bleaching, dusting, ironing, cooking.

Then I start to write a few blog posts, listen to some music, decide which songs to review. Then I enter some comps and sort through my emails. I'm on Twitter, Pinterest and now Instagram too.

I also try to sell stuff I no longer want or use on ebay. Then I also have a life. Weekends away, holidays, planning, doing the shopping, going for meals, going for a drink.

Is there anyway of making days last longer somehow? Just not enough hours!! :)

Yo Sushi, Taylor Swift and diet blip!

Yesterday saw me slightly buggar up my diet. Not massively, but still I think 2 and a half weeks from now, I am probably going to be full of regrets.

However, its done now, so I have to live with it and also resolve it. Tomorrow is PT. That should sort it!!

It had better sort it put it that way. Today I have pretty much been on track. I have had a quorn spaghetti bolognese for tea, which isn't too bad.

If I could somehow be a gym addict for the next 2 weeks, that would be fantastic!! Not going to worry too much about the scales - only by my clothes and how they fit.

I think thats a healthier way to feel as I'm not going to reach goal. However, I want to look nice so it will be worth it to at least tone up what I have.

I do have nice dresses that are best suited to flat tums but I think I can probably work with what I've got this one last time.

I say this one last time because this is the last overweight holiday I am going on. I am 40 next year, and I am not being fat and forty for anyone!!

2 and a half weeks - I can be a gym bunny :)

Taylor Swift gig is today!!

This afternoon we are off to Manchester to see Taylor Swift. Yes, I am in my late 30's and my partner is older than me approaching 50! Not the obvious age group but let me explain.

G is 10 years old and this is her first gig. We are going with her of course, and so is her mum. Neither parent wanted to miss her first experience at an arena gig, so we are going en masse.

Now lets the formalities dealt with I have to admit I am a bit excited myself too! Taylor has been one of my featured artists on My Music page - see my week with Taylor Swift here.

I'm sure its going to be fantastic. I will fill you in on the details tomorrow. :)

Day 1 of My Week with Goldfrapp - Black Cherry

Day 1 of my week with Goldfrapp and to begin its the wonderful 'Black Cherry'.

'Black Cherry' the single was released in 2004 and is taken from the album of the same name released in 2003.

The intro to this song is simply beautiful. Its starts off twinkly piano keys, then builds into an atmospheric electro-synth number full of beautiful strings as a backdrop to Alison Goldfrapps breathy sweeping soulful vocals.

This was the fourth single from the album, which itself reached number 19 in the UK album chart. The single reached number 28 which isn't bad for a fourth single.

'Black Cherry' is an instantly recognisable song, not least because it doesn't fit neatly into a particular genre in my opinion. Its indie and its dance, its electronic and synthetic, but beautifully orchestrated so its less Chemical Brothers and more Portishead, but actually like neither. It has glam rock, 70's and 80's in there, but also, when Alison reaches those high notes? I'm taken back in time to old school diva's like Ella Fitzgerald such is the soulful resonance in Alison's voice.

This is at once a slow paced, ultimate seduction, powerful and emotional song, whilst at the same time it has a pulse and a dance vibe. Goldfrapp just hit the right notes in every sense with this track.

I couldn't find an official 'official'  video anywhere to share, but the one I did find featured Alison in a big house, getting ready, coming down an elaborate staircase before performing the track on stage in a cool black jumpsuit, hat and killer heeled boots.

The vocals open with "How can it be? I can taste you now. How can I see when you're everything". She breathes her way through the song, sexily, seductively "Excite me, ignite me". The sexuality of this song just oozes out of every note.
Its the eccentricity of this track that makes it really stand out to me. Its not quite in time, or on beat piano notes, and the breathy, slowness of her vocals against the backdrop that shouldn't work but make the song what it is. Sheer brilliance.

So there we have it day 1 'Black Cherry'. If you have never heard this go and listen to it immediately. Its amazing. If you can't wait for day 2, then check out My Music page here to find loads more to keep you entertained. Happy listening :)

It is 185 days to Christmas :)

That's a scary thought isn't it? Almost the end of June, no sign of a summer anywhere yet, and its only 185 days to the man in red arriving again!!

Maybe this year I might prepare a little earlier. After all, this year sees my first ever Christmas Dinner chez my place!!! Argghh - scary.

So things to do to prepare:

  • buy Christmas cards
  • write card list
  • write a present list for me if anyone should ask
  • write a list of ideas of what to get everyone
  • start to get a few bits and bobs
  • buy wrapping paper and trimmings
  • plan the menu for Christmas dinner
  • plan the menu and options for Christmas night
  • plan for Boxing Day
  • get some Christmas themed table covers and glasses and plates
This year, I shall be in control, cool, calm and collected.

Yeah right. This year I shall be on the pinot at 9am to cope with it!! :)

Don't miss my new single of the week - Tinie Tempah ft Jess Glynne - Not Letting Go

My new single of the week is the brill 'Not Letting Go' by Tinie Tempah ft. Jess Glynne.

This is such a catchy summer number, which would be better still if we could actually experience some sunshine this summer please!!

Check it out and let me know what you think :)

2 days until Taylor!

It is now 2 days - 2 more sleeps until Taylor Swift. Is it actually wrong in my late 30's to be very excited indeed at bopping around to Swifty?

Probably! Do I care? Not a jot. Me, my partner and his ex will be the oldest folks there I'm betting. However, this fact will not prevent me from thoroughly enjoying myself!

Taylor's songs are catchy, there's no denying it. My particular favourites are We are never getting back together and Blank Space so I hope she does those. I know some of the words to those so I can embarrass the hell out of little G! Tee hee!

Seriously though, I am well excited. Yes she is skinny, yes she is young - 2 things with which I have nothing in common and by rights really should not be a fan. But I am.

There, I said it. I'm out as a Taylor Swift fan.

I have just one more thing to say.

Yay Swifty!!!!  :)

Tonight's PT - a hot and sweaty affair!

Tonight was a particularly hot and sweaty affair! Even by my standards I was a big red faced mess this evening!!

Here is what he put me through:

  • 4 minute run to start with on treadmill 6mph
  • 4 sets of 10 push ups on the step
  • 4 x 1 minute incline sprint on treadmill
  • 4 sets of 10 box burpees and jumps
  • 4 sets of 12KG single arm kettle bell swings - 20 reps
  • 4 sets of 10 plank rotations
  • 4 x 1 minute sprints on stair master single steps 15 level
  • 4 x 1 minute sprints on stair master double steps 15 level
  • 3 sets of 2 lengths of studio walking lunge with weight bar
  • 3 sets of 6 lengths of studio running touch downs
  • 3 sets of 10 reps squat with weight bar and side lunge each side
  • 3 sets of 10 lengths of studio with squat touch at each end
I was and still am absolutely knackered. That also means that I have done 60 squats already of my required 100 squats today. I've done 10 more when I got home so 40 more to go.

Squat challenge to be joined tomorrow by abs every day, plus PT twice per week and at least 2 more gym sessions per week. I shall be working it baby!! :)

My Week with Goldfrapp begins

My week with Goldfrapp begins, so I shall choose 7 of their songs, one per day for 7 days - 1 week. But before all that, lets find out a bit more about this unusual, unique indie group.

The group is actually a duo consisting of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory. The first thing that's surprised me is that her name is her genuine name - I thought it was a name made up to sound like a cool band name. It is a cool band name, but its her own.

Their music has such a soulful vibe to it - full of her husky sultry vocals and Will's synthesizer sounds. They have never deviated too far off course from their original sound which I find really interesting and appealing.

Alison started her music career by providing vocals for Tricky and Orbital. Will Gregory heard a track and they began to work together, thus becoming Goldfrapp. This London duo became such due to the immediate connection between them.

In 1999 they signed with a record label and went on to release their first album, 'Felt Mountain' in 2000. It was critically well received but only reached number 57 in the UK albums chart. It was heavy on the synthesizer and very deep in meaning, but set the scene for what was to follow.

Their second album 'Black Cherry' was released in 2003. This was the album that spawned the tracks 'Train', 'Strict Machine', 'Twist'  and 'Black Cherry'. This album was a more 70's inspired glam rock homage, but still similar in style to the first album thereby staying true. It reached number 19 in the UK albums chart and set Alison as a bit of a style icon.

2005 saw the release of their third album 'Supernature'. This was still electro synth and husky vocals, but definitely more of a move towards dance music. This was their biggest hit to date reaching number 2 on the UK album chart. It included the singles 'Number 1', 'Ooh La La' and 'Ride a White Horse' giving more than a passing reference to T-Rex in sound and name mention.

Album number 4 was released in 2008 'Seventh Tree'. This was kind of a subdued version of 'Supernature' with acoustic guitars adding to their distinct electronic sound. This album featured the singles 'A&E', and 'Caravan Girl'.

Their fifth album 'Head First' was released in 2010. This was back to being more dance oriented and included the singles 'Rocket', 'Alive'  and 'Believer'. This album peaked at number 6 in the UK album chart.

In 2012 Goldfrapp released a compilation album of their singles called 'The Singles' imaginatively. It also included 2 new tracks.

2013 saw their 6th album 'Tales of Us' released. This album peaked at number 4 in the UK album chart. It was well received being cited as a beautiful album and a return to their earlier softer sound.

Goldfrapp have won awards and accolades, but its the distinctive vocals and synthesizer sound that really appeals to me, not their acclaim.  I'm looking forward to choosing my 7 songs from this great British duo.

First song coming tomorrow. If you can't wait then you can find loads more music to keep you going over at My Music page here. :)

Sunday night and I'm feeling blue :(

Sunday nights are notorious for that sinking feeling of work in the morning. Regardless of your job, whether you love it, whether you hate it, most of us would prefer not to have to get up in the morning.

This Sunday though, we've done buggar all over the weekend. Its been nice having the family over, but the two of us haven't done anything together. I am a bit lacking in stimulation and feel like I am climbing the walls.

So the other half, who was poorly Friday and Saturday, hence not going out, or doing anything, has just suggested a walk along to the pub. Part of me was like "ooh yes, lovely glass of vino". Then the sensible part kicked in with "diet diet diet" Yawn!

The diet argument won sadly. So we are once again sitting on the sofa watching TV and I am bored and blue.

I like weekends to be a real break from the norm not an extension of it. Roll on next weekend which hopefully will involve some fun. :(

Happy Fathers Day

If you are a Dad then a very Happy Fathers Day to you.

What are your plans for today? My plan is that my other half is a dad, and 3 of his 4 kids are here already so he will be, I trust, spoiled a bit. Then his other son will head down here at some point, but he is a dad himself, so no idea what time that might be.

Then I shall go see my lovely dad. Best Dad in the world quite frankly. Here he is cooking us a meal for my mum's birthday last April.

I think its been a hidden talent all these years you know - being able to cook? Never knew, until mum broke her wrist last Christmas, then his secret was out. He's a bit of Gordon on the sly my dad. Cunning devil he!

So I have bought him a leather wallet from Weird Fish, and a "Man Tin". Hope he likes them.

From there, we have to go see the other halfs extremely grumpy and not very well dad. I doubt he will know its Father's Day until we get there, as he's not so good at the minute, but its important that we remember even if he doesnt.

So that's our fathers day plans. What are your plans? Whatever they are, hope you spoil all the Papas out there. :)

My new single of the week - Tinie Tempah ft. Jess Glynne - Not Letting Go

My new single of the week is from Tinie Tempah ft. Jess Glynne with 'Not Letting Go'.

Tinie Tempah or rather Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu as is his real name, hails from London, and is a fantastic cool edgy rapper, without being offensive. Jess Glynne is also from London, and has featured on a number of hit songs in recent years, not least this one.

Tinie has the sort of low key rap style rather than being brash, that softly introduces the song before Jess kicks in with the title line '"Not Letting Go". The combination is really catchy. Jess has such a soulful and unique sound and quality to her vocals, that its distinctive immediately.

The video to this track is 100% cool. Tinie giving a hot girl a piggy back for starters, various wardrobe changes and a back drop of East London with The Shard and the London Eye featured behind them.

This combination of summer pop come edgy rap will be massive this summer everywhere is what I'm betting. Released on 21st June 2015 expect great things of this fabulous hook up.

Go take a listen, and let me know what you think. You can find all my previous choices over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

My Blog is 2 years old!!

Saturday 15th June 2013. First blog post ever! I had no idea whatsoever what I was doing or what I would write about. I ended up posting something about Marilyn Monroe. Not a bad start!

Fast forward 2 years, and I have developed into a bit of a mix blog of lifestyle and music. I have My single of the week, the "My Week With " series where I pick a band and then spend a week with them i.e. 7 songs over 7 days.

Then there is my ongoing Battle with the Bulge - I am one of those that yo-yo's so I share my pain and progress. My travels is becoming more of a focus for me recently, and then there is my Crafty page.

I'm quite into my food, and currently engrossed in listing Top 10's which is great fun, as is my project to find out just how many films I've seen and also review the odd film over at My Films page.

My Body Gallery shows my progress, and then finally we my 2015 page for my wishlist and resolutions, and my Musn't Grumble page where I just vent!!
